This semester, one of the most valuable parts of this class was getting the chance to connect with my sport professional pen pal, Glenn Holland. Glenn is a physical therapist who actually helped me during my elbow surgery rehab, so this wasn’t just a random connection. I’ve seen firsthand how important his role is in helping athletes get back on the field.
Through our conversations, one thing kept coming up over and over again. A lot of athletes, especially younger ones, don’t take recovery seriously enough. They rush back too quickly, skip steps, or just don’t fully understand how important it is. That’s where my idea for this project came from.
I decided to create a campaign called “Recover to Perform.” The goal is simple. Help athletes understand that recovery is just as important as training if they want to perform at a high level.
The campaign would live mainly on platforms like Instagram and TikTok since that’s where most younger athletes are already spending their time. Instead of long explanations, the content would be quick, easy to understand, and actually useful. Things like short videos showing proper recovery exercises, tips on arm care for baseball players, and real stories from athletes who have gone through injuries.
Glenn would be a big part of this as well. Having someone with real experience in physical therapy adds a level of credibility that makes the content more trustworthy. He could help explain things in a way that athletes can actually understand and apply.
To get the campaign going, it would start with a few teaser posts and then move into consistent weekly content. The goal would be to build a following and eventually connect with local teams or training facilities to help spread the message even further.
This idea was really shaped by my own experience and by talking with Glenn. I’ve seen how frustrating injuries can be, and I’ve also seen how much proper recovery can make a difference. That made this project feel more real to me instead of just another assignment.
Overall, this assignment showed me how important connections are in the sports world. Having Glenn as a resource helped me come up with something that actually feels like it could work. It also made me realize that sport communication isn’t just about media, it’s about creating messages that can actually help people.
