I am interested in cybersecurity because I am good with computers and technology. I have helped my parents fixed troubleshooting issues such as printer issues, router issues, and updates to their computers. My brother had worked for Dollar Tree in the IT help desk. He told me about some of his work experiences and things I would look forward to doing, such as answering the phone and helping Dollar Tree associates in various locations with computer troubleshooting issues. I also have a cousin who got his own company in cybersecurity in Maryland, he told me some skills that I need to have to go into the field and gave me some advice on how to be successful like he is. He told me that I would need skills like a security plus certification, Microsoft certification, and public speaking. I took AP computer science when I was in high school, and I found out coding wasn’t my strong suit so I’m still trying to find what area of cyber is for me because it’s various areas of cyber to go under so I’m still trying to gain knowledge, experience, and the skills to see what fits the best for me. Enterprise Cybersecurity was my major when I first came to ODU. That major relates to cybersecurity because you are learning about technical side, but it focuses on cybersecurity from a business standpoint. The skills that you learn are networking, cyber defense, management, and how to be an entrepreneur. Cybersecurity Risk Management is my current major this is a new major at ODU, it focuses on the technical side of cybersecurity, and you will learn programming, networking, security, and compliance. Cyber Operations is a major that relates to cybersecurity because you will know what to do when it is a cyber-attack and how to recover and defend yourself or the company. Cybersecurity (Bachelor of Science) is a major where you will learn various things like penetration testing, ethical hacking, cyber law, cryptography, operating systems and network server configuration and administration. My major cyber risk management is an interested field to me because what could be better than defending the government or a private company from hacking it is also a rewarding salary.
