Exploring Culture
The practice that helped me learn more about cultural perspectives was lingrolearning. The reason why I said that is because I learned more about what it is like living in a different place that isn’t in the united states. The other places that I learned from just looking up information include facts that I haven’t learned already know or new facts that would be interesting to learn to broaden my aspect about the culture in the different countries. I believe that everyone can have different experiences learning.
I felt like I learned more about what the Hispanic culture is like because I’m Hispanic but I never fully experienced everything. I had a quinceañera when I was 15. It was something that I wanted because I wanted to fully embrace my heritage and where I came from. Learning a different language can help a lot when learning more about the culture. As I was explaining above in my first paragraph, a lot of what I learned was from the internet but even from the web. I think one thing that I kept learning about was what app is most popular in their own country. I believe the only misconception that I had was that it would be the same thing here in the united states and not something different. I know WhatsApp and Facebook were super popular.
Engaging in Communities
The importance of engaging in a different language is that you learn the aspect of someone else’s language. Not everyone is going to speak the same language which is okay and it is amazing if you learn it. The reason why it was so important for me to learn was that I was adopted from Guatemala City when I was 5 months so I have always wanted to learn Spanish. I think that kids in elementary school should start learning about what language means. The photo that I included was from when my foster parents brought me to my parents when they got me.
Interpersonal Communication
The discussion that I decided to write about was a discussion board about my favorite person. I couldn’t just choose one of my favorite people so the person that I decided to choose is my two best friends Cassandra and Adrianna. What I mentioned in this section is how old they are, where they are from, words that describe them, and lastly what we all like to do. Half of it needed to. be in English and a couple of sentences needed to be in Spanish to describe things.
I personally have felt I have grown in all these assignments and others because I have put a lot of effort into making sure that I had all the correct information. The way that I overcome the difficulty is by asking for help when I don’t understand certain words by asking the professor or a friend in the course. I grow in each assignment by reading all the instructions and making sure that I don’t forget anything that I need to include. I believe I excel in making sure that I turn everything in on time. I believe the reason why I was able to turn everything in on time was that I used a spreadsheet that reminded me when my assignments were due.
Presentational Speaking
The Presentational Speaking assignment that I decided to write about was when we had to pronounce the different ways to pronounce the alphabet in Spanish. The reason why I decided to choose this one is that it was the first time in a while that I had to do it so I was nervous to know how it was going to turn out. After getting the feedback, I was proud of how I did. I included a screenshot of when we had to present. The good thing about doing this was it can benefit showing our progress about what we has individuals have learned and the progress that we have made.
Presentational Writing
The screenshot that I included was from when we had a discussion about our favorite holiday. The reason why I chose this certain writing piece was that I thought it was one of the good discussion boards that I had to do and write. I picked to write about Christmas Day because it has been a holiday I have celebrated since I was little. My parents taught me that it is not all about the present but about spending time together as a family.
The way that I felt I could excel in this area by writing about different areas of topics with making sure that I keep up with the consistency of writing. I believe that it is also very important to make sure you can write because writing can go a long way if you’re trying to look for a different place or writing an email to a person to figure out where you want to go. I know personally
Interpretive Listening
The recording that I decided to was our conversation 3 – the module that we had to do as an assignment. It was easy but at some points, I was confused about what to say. The thing I found interesting was being able to carry on a conversation over Flipgrid. I believe that I have grown to learn about this listening assignment because it didn’t have any close captions which is better because you have to listen fully. One thing I want to personally start doing is making sure that I can understand when someone is speaking because personally, I struggle with having a harder time listening because I’m more of a visual learning so it puts my brain to work to make sure I understand what we are talking about especially since we are learning a new language.
Interpretive Reading
I decided to write about 10 ways it is beneficial to be bilingual. I got this article from one of the links that are included in our canvas. When I first saw it I knew that it was going to be an amazing article to read. I definitely would recommend reading this if you get a chance.
The takeaway from this article is how important being bilingual is. One fact that I learned was that it can help make you “stay mentally stronger for longer”. They revealed that people whose brains are bilingual actually age more slowly which is very impressive and amazing to know that knowing another language can benefit so much. Another fact that I was reading about is it can increase awareness of cultures which is always important because most of us don’t share the same language or culture. It is always refreshing to know that other people live a different lifestyle than us which is super amazing if you think about it. One thing I think we should do is continue to learn more languages. I know personally so far learning Spanish is one of my favorite things that I have done. I would love to continue learning more languages if I can to help me in the future. A lot of workplaces ask you if you can speak more than one language because you may have guests or customers that come in that may not speak English so having two languages that you know can help in your workplace. Overall I think this website helped me learn more about everything. I want to continue learning more about how beneficial it is.
