SCADA Systems

A few vulnerabilities of critical infrastructure systems are network segmentation, DdoS attacks, and malware attacks. Network segmentation is an approach that divides a network into multiple segments allowing administrators to control the flow of traffic. Ddos attacks is a type of malicious attack that can mess with an organization’s public cloud infrastructure. All of these can put the community at risk of information being leaked out into the wrong hands. I would say malware is the worst one because it can result in data loss and shut administrators out of systems in exchange for a ransom of cash. SCADA systems are used for monitoring and controlling distribution of water, traffic lights, electricity transmissions, gas transportations and oil pipelines. If someone was to hack into the system that controlled the traffic lights, that would be bad for the whole population of the U.S because someone else would be basically controlling all the moving vehicles and that could potentially lead to accidents if they are doing it in a malicious way which we’re assuming that they are. SCADA can address these specific issues and solve them by developing specialized industrial VPN and firewall solutions. Some people seem to believe that SCADA are safe enough because it’s not connected to the Internet and that’s not true.
