Textual Practice: Miranda on cryptography. Miranda writes, “The study of ciphering and deciphering has disrupted patterns of dominant literacies and this field of study reveals profound impacts on our conceptions of literacy— securing the inherent multimodality of literacy, disrupting common conceptions of readership, reflecting embodied encoding and employing alternative materialities to obscure the most critical messages in times of high stakes. Ciphering and deciphering ask textual consumers to be more nimble, more flexible and more self-reflexive with their literate practices. In the digital age, cryptography has only become more relevant, given that algorithmic encryption is ubiquitous to all our communication.I invite you all to tinker with Braingle and this Enigma simulator as I share highlights of this textual practice.”
