Early on in life the way I consumed sports was through the TV alone. Not really heavily engaging in social media until high school, everything I knew and learned was through my family and the television. Back then it wasn’t heavily necessary to get the information you needed through social media and watching TV and reading things was enough. Going into high school though I was more in tune with social media and what it can offer. Being the type of person to check things like fan pages and see updates through fans like me, I stuck with following pages that shared similar views as me. Instagram pages that give Saints updates or sifting through the unbiased main sport pages my view on sports changed drastically as I was no longer just behind a TV screen. Also learning early on that I had a passion for writing my dream then turned to wanting to interview the players I saw, take their pictures and learn the real side of them. That then turned me into choosing the major and minor I am currently in now. Thinking back the way sport media has been consumed all these years has changed drastically. Things like television are really only prominent when watching the game in question. Getting updates and learning breaking news is now something social media handles. While this does have some truth to it we can also see that despite this broadcasts like ESPN, Sportscenter, and the NFL and more, air talk shows that thousands of sport fans still watch today. Wanting to hear opinions from former players, sport professionals and more brings in viewers, but we can also note that a lot of clips from these shows then get posted online to social media. I can say myself that as social media became a more prominent aspect of my life, the time I took to watch these shows lessened as I can just catch clips on apps like Instagram and TikTok. I believe in the next five years social media will only grow and broadcasts like the ones I named will further be a thing only found on social media. As podcasts grow I also feel like television as we know it will only dwindle. I can confidently say that I rarely watch TV anymore and solely stick to platforms like Youtube and social media for my entertainment and sport knowledge. I do hope that social media becomes less of a toxic place to share your opinion despite knowing that will never come true, it’s something that I know a lot of other people wish for.
