Since neurons are the cells that underlie many aspects of brain function, including emotion, thinking, and behavior, they have a direct relation to psychiatry. Psychiatric disorders like bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, depression, and anxiety are caused by disturbances in the electrical activity or chemical signaling (neurotransmitters) that neurons use to communicate. Psychiatrists who understand how neurons function, how they form network ,and how medications, environment, or heredity can alter their signaling are better equipped to diagnose, treat, and manage mental health conditions. Since neurons are the building blocks of the brain’s communication system, they are crucial to understanding and improving mental health.
