Marshawn Kneeland was a respectable man, and a heck of an athlete. His life was cut far beyond too short on November 5th, 2025, as he battled with his mental health. Beyond his accomplishments, he also left behind stronger mental health awareness for athletes. His death told a story that opened more eyes to the mental battle that athletes deal with while under the pressure of having to perform at the best of their ability.
His rise began in Wyoming Michigan at Godwin Heights High School where he played football, not just as a linebacker, but as a tight end too. Upon finishing his final year of high school, he finished with 110 tackles, 8 sacks, 330+ receiving yards, and 5 touchdowns, plus receiving mention of an all-state honor his junior year. Then in his senior year he received his spot on the all-state first team. He went on to play college football for Western Michigan University in 2019, where he then achieved the 2023 second-team All-MAC selection. His 149 tackles, 12.5 sacks, 3 forced fumbles, and 3 pass deflections caught the eye of the NFL Scouting Combine, where he received an offer. He made such a great impression at the combine that the Dallas Cowboys selected him for the 56th pick of the 2024 NFL draft as a defensive end. At this point it seems like everything is going well for Marshawn Kneeland, but everybody has their own life issues behind closed doors. The reason that originally influenced his decision to go to school close to home is because his grandpa’s health was in rough shape. He ended up passing away right before his senior year of college. In order to reach his goal to the NFL he had to push through the pain. Then just 2 months before Marshawn got drafted to the NFL, his mom passed away. That obviously had a huge impact on Marshawn Kneeland. He was actually less than 2 weeks away from his scouting combine when his mom passed away, yet he knew she wanted his dream to come true, so he still went and performed to the best of his ability impressing the scouts. He had the fastest defensive lineman times in the three-cone drill and short shuttle. With being drafted and having his hard work and dreams come true, it can be difficult to enjoy it when his mom was no longer there to share his accomplishments with. He mentioned in an interview that he always hoped his mom would be at his NFL draft party.
From that position he pushed forward and continued his NFL dream with 14 tackles before he got hurt during his rookie year. His right knee got injured going for a tackle and required him to have arthroscopic surgery. He came back to the starting lineup in his sophomore year. One game against the Arizona Cardinals, he recovered a blocked punt for his first NFL touchdown. Shortly after that is when the unexpected actions of Marshawn Kneeland happened. It was reported that he evaded the police from a traffic stop before crashing his car into a truck. As the search continued, Marshawn’s girlfriend spoke with the police informing them of his mental illness history with various issues including depression and anxiety. When they found him, there was an apparent gunshot to the head that was self-inflicted. It was almost as if reaching his NFL dream to be a starter and even scoring a touchdown was depressing for him because he could not share it with his mom even though he knew she was always watching over him.
In sports, the athletes are held accountable to compete at their best each and every time. It often gets overlooked when an athlete is battling personal life issues. Since the passing of Marshawn Kneeland, more focus has been put towards the players’ resources to mental health. This includes a change from part-time mental health staff requirement to a full-time staff of licensed mental health workers in the NFL. More team psychologists have also been added to the NFL staff. The Dallas Cowboys team honored Marshawn Kneeland in their following game with season-long tributes, including a moment of silence in the stadium for him and creating custom apparel such as decals and bracelets to keep their lost teammate in the game with them. The owner of the Dallas Cowboys team, Jerry Jones, covered his funeral cost and any financial support to his grieving family. Marshawn Kneelands tragic story helps society realize that athletes have problems too. We see their fame and money and instantly envy them, but athletes are still people and we never know what is going on in someone else’s life unless it is expressed. That is why mental health workers are so important in the sports field. There has to be methods to deal with the pressures of athletes along with support with their personal life problems as well.
