Cyberstalking/ Cyber Harassment

Over the past two decades, technology has surged into businesses, communities, and the lives of individuals, altering the way that people communicate, study, work, and interact (Baer, 2010). People in various parts of the world can communicate in real time
on a variety of devices such as cell phones, tablets, or computers.

How technology affects a person’s behavior? Increased isolation, reduced social interaction and social skills, and increased human-to-machine interactions are all a result of an overuse of technology, which has created a wall between many people globally. Technology in the classroom can also be used to report on students’ disciplinary issues such as tardiness and negative behavior. Strong evidence shows how students gain a stronger sense of control by tracking their behavior and have an easier time recognizing when they fall into negative patterns. CS and CH have become prevalent problems that warrant the attention of criminologists and criminal justice scholars. Although no national estimates of the extent and pervasiveness of these crimes exist, studies of various cities and campuses are cause for concern. CH typically involves engaging in an act or behavior that torments, annoys, terrorizes, offends, or threatens an individual via email, instant messages, or other means with the intention of harming that person. In its most basic definition, CS entails “the repeated pursuit of an individual using electronic or Internet-capable devices” (Reyns et al., 2012, p. 1). Repeated pursuits
include any unwanted electronic communications, and may be threatening, coercive, or intimidating.

implementation of technology influences the values of society by changing expectations and realities. Over emphasizing technology has created lack of trust among people. Technology influences our everyday life and has a strong influence on culture.  The changes in technology affected the definitions of appropriate and inappropriate behavior by the birth of cyberbullies, cyber stalking and cyber harassment. Human behaviors and thinking skills are rapidly being reprogrammed by technology with even more developments on the horizon will alter our future and shape our identity.
