Skills & Artifacts

Skill 1: Technical Cybersecurity

Throughout my cybersecurity coursework at Old Dominion University and my completion of Google’s cybersecurity courses, I have developed a strong technical foundation in protecting systems, identifying vulnerabilities, and analyzing networks. My hands-on experience with Linux, SQL, network security, and security tools has helped me understand how organizations defend against cyber threats. These experiences have increased my confidence in troubleshooting technical problems and applying cybersecurity best practices.

Artifact 1 – Google Certificate: Connect and Protect: Networks and Network Security

This certificate strengthened my understanding of computer networking, network architecture, and defensive security measures. I learned how data travels across networks, how attackers exploit vulnerabilities, and how security professionals implement protections such as firewalls and secure configurations. Completing this course complemented my networking coursework at ODU by reinforcing

Artifact 2 – Google Certificate: Tools of the Trade: Linux and SQL

This course introduced me to two of the most important tools used by cybersecurity professionals. I gained practical experience using Linux commands to manage systems and SQL queries to retrieve and analyze information. These technical skills are valuable because they are widely used in security operations centers, digital forensics, and incident response.

Artifact 3 – Wireshark Network Analysis Lab

One of my most valuable laboratory experiences involved using Wireshark to capture and analyze network traffic. This project taught me how to inspect packets, identify communication protocols, and recognize suspicious network behavior. It reinforced classroom concepts while giving me practical experience with one of the industry’s most commonly used network analysis tools.

Skill 2: Research & Technical Communication

Cybersecurity professionals must communicate complex technical information clearly. Through research papers and writing for Cyber News Live, I have improved my ability to explain cybersecurity concepts to both technical and nontechnical audiences. These experiences strengthened my analytical thinking while helping me develop professional writing skills.

Artifact 1 – Cyber News Live Article

Writing for Cyber News Live allowed me to research current cybersecurity developments and publish articles for a public audience. One article discussed Fortinet’s perspective on Australia’s updated cybersecurity framework and explained why organizations must continually adapt their security strategies. Researching and writing this article strengthened my ability to evaluate expert opinions, verify information, and communicate technical topics in a clear and engaging way.

Artifact 2 – IDS 300W Research Paper

My interdisciplinary research paper challenged me to investigate a complex cybersecurity issue using credible academic sources. Completing this project improved my research methodology, critical thinking, and ability to synthesize information from multiple perspectives. It also demonstrated the importance of combining technical knowledge with strong communication skills.

Artifact 3 – Google Certificate: Assets, Threats, and Vulnerabilities

This course expanded my understanding of cybersecurity threats and risk assessment. I learned how organizations identify assets, evaluate vulnerabilities, and prioritize security risks. The knowledge I gained supports my ability to think critically about cybersecurity challenges and apply structured approaches to threat analysis.

Skill 3: Professional Development & Leadership

In addition to technical knowledge, cybersecurity professionals need leadership, teamwork, and professionalism. My internship experiences, student leadership roles, and cybersecurity certifications have helped prepare me for the workplace by strengthening my communication, collaboration, and problem-solving abilities.

Artifact 1 – Innovation Lab Internship (CYSE 368)

My internship provided valuable professional experience outside the classroom. Working with others on projects taught me how to communicate effectively, manage responsibilities, and contribute to a professional environment. The experience also helped me connect concepts learned in my coursework to real-world situations.

Artifact 2 – Pi Kappa Phi Secretary

Serving as Secretary for Pi Kappa Phi helped me develop leadership and organizational skills. I learned how to manage responsibilities, communicate with members, maintain accurate records, and work collaboratively with other officers. These experiences strengthened the professional skills that are essential in cybersecurity careers.

Artifact 3 – Google Certificate: Play It Safe: Manage Security Risks

This course focused on identifying, assessing, and managing cybersecurity risks within organizations. I learned about security policies, governance, compliance, and risk management frameworks. These concepts are critical because cybersecurity is not only about technology—it also requires effective planning, communication, and decision-making to protect organizational assets.
