Turning a Heartache Into a Passion !

The Health Professional that I decided to interview was Ashley Williams. Mrs. Ashley works at Bon Secours Urgent Care as a CCMA. A CCMA is an abbreviated term for a Certified Clinical Medical Assistant. In order to get into the position that she currently is in, she first had to obtain her Associates Degree at a community college in her hometown. She also acquired her Medical Assistant certification in addition to this degree. After fulfilling the requisite qualification requirements, Ms. Ashley began her career in the medical field. Mrs. Ashley’s entry into the medical field was a significant achievement since her motivation to work in this field sprang solely from her grandmother’s lupus diagnosis. When her grandmother grew ill, she spent a lot of time with her and saw nurses take care of her grandmother firsthand. Ashley was inspired to convert her grief into her passion once her grandmother transitioned into the afterlife. Her desire to work in this field and provide the same level of care to people worldwide that was provided to her grandma was sparked by her grandmother’s death. She began her career at a primary care office. However, after completing a bone marrow transplant and hepatology unit in the hospital, she was able to switch to urgent care, where she saw a lot more patients with a wide variety of illnesses. Ashley’s daily responsibilities as a CCMA at an urgent care facility includes keeping track of patients’ vital signs, point-of-care tests, and blood work with the ultimate goal of assisting the doctors in addressing a patient’s complaint. Mrs. Ashley has encountered a wide range of incidents since she began working in urgent care, some good, some bad, and others unexpected. In particular, Ashley regarded the most startling aspect of her career to be the time when one of her very own trainees became a patient while on the job due to an unexpected seizure. In terms of difficult aspects of the job, Ashley believes that pediatrics is the most difficult component of her job as a CCMA because she finds it especially heartbreaking to see children sick. Regardless of the tiny barriers that she encounters on a daily basis, it is clear to me that Ashley enjoys and is passionate about her job. Her passion is clear in the way she talks about her career with all smiles throughout the interview. In the conclusion of her interview, she even goes on to share a pearl of wisdom for aspiring medical students. Ashley states that in a profession that deals with a wide range of emotions, it’s critical to have empathy for both the patients and their families. As a Nursing Student, I honestly couldn’t agree with her piece of advice more.

Overall, this interview was intellectually stimulating and inspiring. Although the profession she currently holds in the medical field is not the same as the one I hope to hold in the future. It was still interesting to learn about the responsibilities, obstacles, path taken, and advice from someone who presently works in an industry I hope to work within a few years. Speaking with someone who works in the medical field was an incredible experience since, regardless of title, everyone in the industry fundamentally has the same objective.
