I intend to major in nursing. Nursing has always peaked my interest due to my interactions with nurses in my own and my family members’ lives. However, it was my great-grandmother’s cancer diagnosis that piqued my curiosity and inspired me to pursue a career as a nurse. My GG had the most amazing care from her nurses, and it was this experience that made me realize that nursing would be a fantastic fit for my personality. I possess many of the qualities that those wonderful nurses had, including kindness, self-assurance, compassion, teamwork, and patience. My GG’s cancer experience is also one of the reasons I want to advance my career as an oncology nurse. This form of nursing captures my attention because it strives to improve the lives of cancer patients. Making a difference in the lives of any cancer patient would, for me, be immensely touching and gratifying. Additionally, I am confident that my GG would be proud to know that I am helping others in their fight against the disease that she unfortunately did not overcome. After discussing my aspirations with my primary care pediatrician, I was fortunate to be offered the opportunity to shadow two nurses at my pediatric practice during my 10th grade year. It truly offered me a firsthand look at nurses’ responsibilities and approaches to the various circumstances they face. Overall, the opportunity helped me improve my knowledge of nurses and, additionally, helped me fully commit to my major.
