Parallel Major

The parallel major that I chose was health services administration, I was interested in this major because it focuses more on how the hospital runs like behind the scenes and the business side.  What compelled me most about health services administration was that this career has responsibilities like managing human resources and the financial side of the hospital as well. From researching this major, administrators plan, manage and direct medical and other health services.  Other things that they do are control facilities, watch over clinical areas and other practice groups of doctors and nurses. So, this career has many responsibilities and other larger parts they have to focus on are changes that may occur in healthcare laws, regulations, and technology.  These administrators have lots to do and they make sure that physicians and other healthcare professionals will treat their patients correctly. Careers that administrators can have are: social and community manager, training and development manager, health insurance specialists, human resource manager, and a hospital CEO.  There are many careers that can be achieved as well. For health services administration, many of the courses relate to the nursing requirements so the two classes that I needed to take were the principles of public health and information literacy and research course. The only other difference in the application process is I am required to take the HESI test for nursing and no need for recommendation letters, but for health services administration I need three recommendation letters and there’s a GPA difference.  Ways I could gain professional experience for health services administration is, shadowing a manager at a hospital, volunteer at other practices, make a connection with people in the career field, and working my way up. Working my way up in this career would be making connections so I could have better opportunities to gain an internship that could go towards a better career. The advisor for health services administration is, Jim Bellamy.
