Pre-Semester Reflection
- Transition to college
I am most excited about making new experiences. I think my biggest challenge will be making friends. I want to meet new people it’s just hard for me since I am so quiet. In this first semester, I plan to find a work-study job or a regular job, but it’s harder than I expected. Most jobs on campus expect full-time students to work around 10-15 hours a week and if I get a job off-campus I will probably ask for something similar to the work-study hours or maybe a little more so I can make as much money as possible since I am a broke college student like the majority of the students here. I plan on staying organized, making sure I carve out time for homework and studying, and making sure I write down all my assignments and due dates so I make sure I get everything done one time. In high school, I played basketball and volleyball but no other clubs. This semester I don’t plan on joining and teams or sports clubs because I really want to focus on my classes and grades as much as possible, also if I get a job that’s going to take away more of my free time so I don’t think I will have time for anything else.
- Major/Career
I plan on majoring in nursing. I chose this major because I love helping people especially people in need, there are also so many different fields of nursing so you have a big selection to choose from, there are always jobs available for nurses and nurses get paid pretty well. I don’t have any medical experience but I think every nurse needs to be very patient and have empathy for their patients. In the next 5-10 years I plan on getting into ODU’s nursing program, graduating, starting my nursing career, and living the life I want to live.
- Study habits
The biggest difference between college and high school is that no one is chasing you down or begging you to do your work or to come to class. Everything is up to you because we’re adults now so I have learned to be way more strict and discipline with myself. Studying is just going over material you learned and trying to get a better understanding of it before a quiz, test, or something like that. Plus there are so many different ways to study. Homework on the other hand is usually an assignment your teacher gives you. It’s usually on something you just learned and it has a specific due date. English: I don’t plan on studying for that class that much since she doesn’t give us tests, it’s mostly just writing assignments. Sociology and chemistry: I plan on studying for those classes throughout every week since it is so much new information Health professions: as of right now I don’t think I’m going to have to study too much for this class but since I need it to get into the nursing program if we have a test or anything of that nature I am gonna make sure I study before so I can make sure I do well on it. I plan on studying at my desk in my room most of the time or maybe in the library or study rooms. The only distractions I can think of are going out and sleeping. To avoid these distractions I’m going to make sure I get a good amount of sleep at night so I am not tired during the day and parties and my friends aren’t going anywhere so I can always go out after I am done studying or doing homework I usually like to study during the middle of the day between classes or right after classes because that is usually when I have the most energy or right before I go to sleep so studying or doing the homework will make me sleep better because I am so tired after. For me, when I study I like to take notes and highlight important information, go over any slide shows or presentations the teacher posted on the blackboard or do practice problems for any type of math problems like in chemistry this semester.
