Blog 10:

At the beginning of this course, and stated in my first blog, were some of my expectations of this course as well as some of the course objectives. My expectations for this course were pretty simple, based on reading all of the course objectives I just wanted to be able to understand every topic as well as possible. For my intended career choice of being a physical therapist, I will work with people all day long so understanding how to interact with all different kinds of people socially and understand some of their thought processes will help me succeed in the best way possible.

I feel I have achieved the course objectives very well. I have an A in this class and have done very well on every test so I feel my knowledge with this course and the course objectives is good. Coming into this course, I already had a little background knowledge of the course since I took psychology last year. My thoughts have changed a lot over the course because I didn’t know how much more in depth the information could get from intro to psychology. All of this information about social psychology has opened up a new perspective for me in how and why people think and act the way they do especially in social situations. I don’t think I would do anything differently if I took this course again, however I would maybe just study a little bit more just to make sure all this information stays in my long-term memory. Over the last few months a lot academically has changed for me. This is the first time I have taken any online classes and all of my classes this semester were online so it was a lot of adjusting. I’ve learned new ways to study and learn material on my own without sitting in class. With that being said this course has also helped me grow academically. I gained a lot of knowledge that I can use outside of this course and in the real world. Now that I have a better understanding of peoples perceptions and mindsets, I can utilize this knowledge to help me in my professional life, in friendships and relationships.

I chose to take a screenshot of my grade in this course (at this moment) as my visual to describe my academic growth/ achievement in this class. While my grades remained pretty steady throughout the course, I do feel I learned more and more as the semester went on.

Blog 9:

I have learned a lot in this class but 3 things/topics have really stuck out to me. The first thing was a topic on love. We did an assignment on the different love types a person can have and what each love type consists of. This is very similar and relevant to one of the items to archive we did in chapter 3. This top artifact also talked about love and attractions. In this you had to analyze yourself as well as ask peers if their attraction to their partners/lovers is because they are very similar or because they are opposites, “opposites attract.” Both of these assignments were very interesting because they are very relevant to everyone around the world as well as people in my age group because we are at the stage of our life now where relationships become more serious.

The second topic is about “self.” A big part of social psychology is being able to recognize different aspects, characteristics and personality traits about yourself. The first thing that dealt with this was our second blog. This blog had us describe ourselves as students. Some things we thought we were good at and some things we thought we could work on. For example in school I describe myself as responsible, dedicated and good at problem solving. The assignment/ concept that was similar to this one was another item to archive. In the chapter 6 item to archive , we had to describe ourselves again. Only this time it wasn’t about school. We had to describe out different traits and personality and how we would react in certain situations based on out personalities. Both of these assignments also related to an assignment we did on self portraits. In this we had to describe how our photos in our camera roll describe us.

Lastly, social media is very big in our society today. It shapes many beliefs and ideas we have. This is why advertising for companies is very big and easy now. Social media is an easy and very popular place to promote products and grab peoples attention. However there are many things that go along with these ads. In blog 6 we had to look at different ads and say why they can be misleading, harmful to society and how different ads can degrade people. I found this very interesting because of how relevant this is today. These ads can have people to think certain ways and develop certain stereotypes. Another assignment that caught my attention and also made me think of the blog was another item to archive. In the module 9 item to archive, we had to look at personal ads this time and show how women and men are seeking certain things. It is said that men want women who are attractive while women dont care as much about physical looks but they care more about a man who is financially stable. This is interesting because there are still so many stereotypes said about how “men do the hard work and make all the money for the family.” This stereotype has gone on for thousands of years and is still somewhat going on today because of peoples own personal ads and wants. Both of these assignment really make you look at things in. a different perspective and see that ads along with personal ads can be very dehumanizing and misleading.

I chose this picture to capture my thought process on the topics this semester. This picture shows some of the main concepts in social psychology and some of the things I talked about in this blog as well.

According to this article and research, men and women have many ways they show sexual conflict with each other. These conflicts can even evolve as a relationship goes on. In many ways women get upset with men and men get upset with women because either their interests aren’t the same or they want something that the other doesn’t. Some of the examples given were: men may feign emotional involvement, sexual conflict may increase jealousy in both men and women and lastly, in a breakup men and women may stalk the other to try and re-engage in the relationship. Some other common examples could be not trusting, controlling, not being considerate of feelings or again just not agreeing with your partners choices or actions.

90 Jealousy Quotes in a Relationship
https://ejoy-english.com/blog/envy-and-jealousy-get-to-know-the-right-usage/

This picture shows a man upsetting/angering a woman. This picture shows a man “flirting” with another girl while his girlfriend watches angrily. This can be an error on the mens part but also just jealousy and overprotectiveness on the women’s part. This is a common way significant others get angry.

10 Reasons Why Women Dont Want Sex As Much As Men
https://www.mensxp.com/relationships/sex-and-intimacy/30385-10-reasons-why-women-don-rsquo-t-want-sex-as-much-as-men.html

This picture shows a man with his arms crossed and looking annoyed at the women because she is saying no to him. This was one of the most common ways, the article talked about, that men get angry. Men are more likely to do things for sexual interactions than women. Sometimes when men do not get what they are pleasing at the moment they become angry. So this shows a women upsetting/angering a man.

Both of these pictures are big examples of sexual conflicts in relationships.

Our emotions are something we feel inside of us. In the video it was stated that because our emotions are our own feelings, we can regulate them. Not only can we regulate them, we can decide what to do with them and how to act on them. That then leads to self-regulation. This is how these two things go hand in hand. We feel our emotions, we acknowledge them and then we decide how to regulate them.

Emotional intelligence to me means how well you can understand your feelings and emotions. What you think and feel can be two completely different things but if you can distinguish the both of them and understand the difference and how they both feel then you have succeeded in emotional intelligence. This can be very hard but thats why having self recognition can be very important to help with your emotional intelligence. I display my emotional intelligence by not lashing out or showing my emotions too strongly or in a wrong way. However because I do not show all of my emotions, I may feel these emotions stringer and not be able to let them go as easily. I could probably improve my EQ (emotional intelligence) by being more aware of my own feelings and showing how to express them a little better.

After taking an EQ test, these were my scores. Everything was scored out of 10, the closer you are to 10 the more you’re capability level is. My lowest section was self awareness. My highest sections were self-management and social awareness and my middle section was relationship management. I think these scores accurately describe me. I always make sure I am helping others in every way I can. I check on my friends and families emotions more than my own. I am able to tell how my friends and other people are always feeling and give them sound advice. I am also very good at handling my emotions which is why the self management section was one of my highest scoring sections as well. All in all, I have learned that I may need to work on recognizing my own emotions just as much as I do in my relationships with friends, acquaintances and family members.

After listening to this ted talk, my eyes have been opened. This ted talk was about advertisements and how women are stereotyped, distorted and dehumanized. While obviously I have been aware of this issue and I’ve seen some of these advertisements myself, it was still shocking for me to see just how many different types of ads do these things to manipulate their buyers. These ads teach men to sexualize women. They also make other women insecure. Although women face these issue more often, men also face these issues as well.

26 Sexist Ads Of The Mad Men Era - Business Insider
https://www.businessinsider.com/26-sexist-ads-of-the-mad-men-era-2014-5

This advertisement is a way to promote the new top to this bottle of ketchup. They are trying to advertise that the top of this bottle is easy to open. However, to do this they are degrading women, trying to say that even a “weak” woman can open the bottle. I feel this advertisement perfectly shows an example of how women can be degraded.

How 25 years of Photoshop changed the way we see reality - The Washington Post
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-intersect/wp/2015/02/19/how-25-years-of-photoshop-changed-the-way-we-see-reality/

This advertisement shows the original photo and the photo put onto the magazine. This photo was clearly edited, the woman in this photo was made skinnier, her skin was made brighter and her facial features were edited. The magazine is trying to advertise how to “look and feel your hottest” and in order to do this it is advertising that you should take “skinny pills.” This advertisement is also sexualizing and degrading women. It is also a false advertisement on how the woman actually looks. They are trying to promote the pills by false advertising how they make you look. This is one of the best examples of how women are made to “look better” by being edited to be skinnier and “prettier.”

Dove slammed for 'racist' body wash ad showing black woman transforming into white woman - National | Globalnews.ca
https://globalnews.ca/news/3792606/dove-slammed-for-racist-body-wash-ad-showing-black-woman-transforming-into-white-woman/

This advertisement was for the soap company “Dove.” It was trying to promote one of their new body washes, however it is showing an African American women using this soap and then turning white. This is not only degrading to women it is also racially profiling them. This is trying to say that your skin will look better after using this soap but the way they advertise this is showing that it “helps” darker skin tones become lighter. This is just another example of how advertisements show that some women aren’t good enough because of how they look. Its offering them to “look better.”

AD 4:

The Objectification of Women in Advertising | Media Marketing
https://www.media-marketing.com/en/opinion/objectification-women-advertising/

This advertisement is an example of sexualizing women. It is showing a girl in underwear and saying it’s your lucky day, not only referring to the product but also referring to sexual activity with a women. This is trying to make women more of objects than of people. Ads and other social media platforms these days make men think it is fine to sexualize women and to think of them for sexual activities instead of as people. I think this ad shows why.

AD 5:

Boys, Body Image and Sexualization: An Equal Opportunity Destroyer - Shaping Youth
https://shapingyouth.org/boys-body-image-and-sexualization-an-equal-opportunity-destroyer/

This advertisement is great for showing that men, the same way as women, can also be degraded and sexualized. Just like in the magazine of the women, this magazine is trying to say that men will only have “sex” or be attractive if they have “big arms and abs.” I chose this advertisement because it is a perfect example of how this can happen to men as well.

Finacea Plus Coupon (get $2 off CeraVe and $10 off Finacea) : Rosacea Support Group
https://rosacea-support.org/finacea-plus-get-2-off-cerave-and-10-off-finacea.html

credible advertisement:

This is considered a credible source because while it promotes its product it also at the bottoms lists possible side effects and the real ingredients and things used in the face products. This source is trustworthy because it doesn’t leave anything out, good or bad. This company is promoting its product but also it goes against itself by also showing possible side effects. This visual was chosen because it includes everything a credible source requires.

Unethical Advertising, Misleading Information or Deceptive...
https://researchleap.com/impact-of-unethical-advertising-misleading-information-or-deceptive-advertising-on-customer-purchasing-intention-with-mediating-effect-of-word-of-mouth-case-of-pakistan/

non-credible advertisement:

This advertisement can be considered not credible because it gives false information. This ad expressed that dentists recommend Viceroys. In reality no dentists recommend any type of cigarettes because they are bad for your mouth and teeth along with your lungs. This advertisement is false advertising and lying about their products and who would recommend it. The communicator is just trying to promote their product in a false way to make them seem healthier and better than they really are. I chose this visual specifically because it is important to see how ads can use something bad, like smoking, and try to make it seem better. It is important to see how an ad like this is not credible.

Pop Art Ray-Ban Rare Prints Ads
https://www.in7colors.com/tag/colorful-ads/

attractive advertisement:

This ad for Ray Bans is considered an attractive advertisement. It is pleasing and appealing to the eye because of all the colors it is. This ad doesn’t really show any words or information but it will get people to be interested in it because it is pleasing to look at. These types of ads can be very effective because they grab peoples attention and make them look deeper into the products. I chose this specific ad because it shows that some ads can catch peoples attention even without any useful information on them. I felt this ad captures an aesthetically pleasing picture.

I did very well on exam 1 as I only missed one question. Although I am proud of the score I got, I could’ve done better to get a 100%. The question I missed dealt with cognition. I understand why I got it wrong and what the right answer is. The reason why I had success on this exam is because I read all the chapters and took my own notes. I also used the review provided to us to try and make sure I understood all of the material. Even though I took all the notes and learned all the information before the exam, I didn’t review until about 2 nights before taking the exam. I learned maybe to better prepare myself I should review the information a little bit every night for the week leading up to the exam. Studying over a longer period of time may also help the information stay in my long term memory instead of only remembering the information for the one exam. I could use this same strategy for the future in every class I take.

Music is a big part of peoples lives and not only for the catchy tunes. People can relate to music on a way deeper level than just the beat of the songs. The “Soul Meets Body” article tells us that songs can represent times in peoples lives, friends, family, personality traits and even core values someone believes in. It is said that a lot of people who have similar tastes in music also have similar core values and things they believe in. I agree with this. A lot of my closest friends have similar music tastes as me and we are very similar in our personalities and beliefs.

There are many songs that come on and make me think of myself, people in my life or certain moments. The first song I would put on a soundtrack of my life would be baby girl by Sugarland. This song makes me think of my dad. My dad ever since I was younger, always plays it for me and tells me the song reminds him of me. This song every time I hear it now, I associate it with my father. The second song I would pick is A little bit Stronger by Sara Evans. This song reminds me that even when life knocks me down or I’m feeling helpless, everyday you can get back on your feet and get stronger. The third song on my soundtrack would be The Champion by Carrie Underwood. This song I associate with my high school soccer career. This song was not only in our warm-up playlist, we also played this song while on our way to our state championship game. The fourth song is Life changes by Thomas Rhett. I feel like just yesterday I was in my freshman year of high school and now I’m a sophomore in college. Life goes by fast and this song makes me think of my life and how quick things can change. It reminds me to not only live in the moment but also to not dwell on anything for too long because your life can change quickly. The fifth song I would pick is Our Song by Taylor Swift.I would pick this song because it makes me think about the time in my life when I was in elementary school and went to my first concert. My family took me to see Taylor Swift for my first concert. I love music and concerts, my family and I go to them all the time. The last song I would pick represents 3 of my life long friends and I. The song Me and My girls by Fifth Harmony has been a song we represented our friendship with since we were young.

My Soundtrack :

Dad- Baby Girl By Sugarland

Life reminder- A little Bit Stronger by Sara Evans

Soccer- The Champion By Carrie Underwood

Life outlook- Life Changes by Thomas Rhett

Concert- Our song by Taylor Swift

Friends- Me and My Girls by Fifth Harmony

” ‘Cause the world keeps spinnin’

This song is another reminder and outlook that the world keeps spinning no matter what and to continue to do everything you need to do.

If I were to describe myself as a student I would say I’m dedicated, responsible and pretty good at problem solving. My whole life I have had long school hours with multiple hours spent on the soccer field everyday. Some days because of this, it is hard for me to find time to do my school work but I always get it done. This has made me good at time management and has made me confident in my school work and learning ability. Sometimes when I am super tired I rush assignments to get them over with, if I made sure all my effort and more of my time goes into my assignments more often I would be more confident after I turn them in. My mean for the General Self-Efficacy Scale was 30. In many samples the mean was around 29, so my score is around the usual mean.

Academic Achievement:

I chose this image to represent myself as a student. This award and medal were given to me by Conference USA to recognize my GPA and academic accomplishments last school year. While I have some things I could work on and gain confidence in, I am confident in most of my academic ability.

Do you ever take a course and when you’re learning a topic you think to yourself, how is this relevant or how will this help me in the real world? Well this is not the case for social psychology.

Everyday life involves social interaction. Whether that’s at school with other students or teachers, with friends or family, at your job with co-workers, clients or bosses or even just with a cashier at a store. This is why the social psychology course and the course objectives are very important and very useful. Some of the course objectives include: Discuss the processes through which people perceive and attempt to understand others, explain how attitudes are formed and changed and how they are related to behavior, discuss the factors that influence our liking for other individuals and that lead to the formation of close relationships, and many others. Learning this material and the objectives for this course will help me understand people better. Knowing how people think, why they act the way they do, what their mind processes are and how to form better relationships, will help me be very successful no matter what I do.

Some of my expectations for this course is to learn as much as I can about people from a psychological standpoint. My intended career is physical therapy. For this job I am going to have to closely interact with patients and co-workers. I’m hoping to gain some knowledge on social interactions and peoples behaviors because that can help me work with my patients to the best of my ability.

To ensure success in this course I intend on completing all assignments to the best of my ability, reading all the modules and trying to retain as much of the information as I can. This information will not only help me pass this course but also help me in everyday life.

Visual image: Heuristics

This meme represents one of the heuristics learned about in our modules and in our first assignment. This heuristic is called the representativeness heuristic. This heuristic is when you make a judgment or decision about someone solely based on things like how they look or their habits. I chose to write about the heuristics because I feel like they are a very useful decision making strategy everyone should know about.
