Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is a pyramid of a human being’s needs. Self-Actualization, esteem needs, Belongingness & Love needs, safety needs, and Physiological needs. Regarding technology, I have an example that fits in each section of this pyramid. Self-actualization which is also self-fulfillment while doing activities like hobbies is a simple one. Back in middle school, I had this app called Episode. It’s an interactive game that has stories that you play as yourself, and you get to make your own choices, and choose how your story goes! The way these stories are made though consists of coding. LOTS of coding which gets advanced depending on how polished you want your story to be when you publish it. This got me familiar with coding and how if you don’t do it correctly or make one mistake, things will not work. For the second category, Esteem needs to remind me of when I used to use Snapchat regularly. When I was younger, I would use the filters and take pictures from all angles when taking selfies. It would help my self-esteem a lot. I sometimes do this on TikTok still too, though, it isn’t solely the only thing responsible for my self-esteem alone. The third category is belongingness & Love needs. Instagram has to be the source of technology for this one. It’s where I talk to my friends daily when it comes to text messaging. Like I said in my About Me page, I blog. I do that on my Instagram story and my friends react and respond to it as well. I feel loved on that platform by my friends as I check in on their stories and message them as well. The fourth category safety needs actually reminds me of the apps at ODU that protect my information. The app DUO for example does that second authentication to make sure I’m the only one logging into let it be Canvas or even WordPress. I also am currently taking classes at my local community college, and they have a similar app like DUO called “Rapid Identity”. These applications are very reassuring for my personal information. Lastly, Physiological needs. There are apps like Amazon for example that deliver just that, multiple items for your well-being. For fast delivery, there are also UberEATS and DoorDash workers who will deliver your food and also stop by the local pharmacy to pick up your needs. I have used all three of these apps at some point and they satisfied my needs. Although, I make sure not to rely on them too much.
