Lab 1: Working with Command Line
This lab introduced me to basic Linux command-line navigation. I practiced using commands like ls, cd, and pwd to move through directories and view files. At first, it was difficult to remember the commands and their exact syntax, especially since everything had to be typed correctly. With practice, I became more comfortable navigating the system. This lab helped me build a foundation for using the Linux terminal, which is an essential skill in cybersecurity.
Lab 2: Working with VI Editor
This lab introduced me to the VI editor in Linux, where I learned how to open files, edit text, and switch between insert mode and command mode. At first, the editor felt confusing because it works differently from normal text editors. One challenge I faced was remembering the commands for saving and exiting the editor, such as :w. :q, and :wq. After practicing several times, I became more comfortable using these commands. This lab helped me understand how system administrators edit files directly in the Linux terminal, which is an important skill in cybersecurity.
Lab 3: Group and User Management
In this lab, I worked with creating and managing user accounts and groups in Linux. I learned how users are assigned roles and how groups help organize permissions within the system. At first, it was a bit confusing to understand how users and groups interact with files access. After working through the lab, I started to understand how permissions are applied based on these roles. This lab helped me see how access control works in Linux, which is important for maintaining system security.
Lab 4: Password Cracking
This lab focused on password security and demonstrated how weak passwords can be compromised using cracking techniques. I learned about different methods used to test password strength and the importance of creating secure passwords. Some of the tools used in the lab were unfamiliar at first, which made it challenging to fully understand how they worked. However, after completing the lab, I gained a better understanding of how attackers can exploit weak credentials. This lab emphasized the importance of strong password practices in cybersecurity.
Lab 5: File Permissions
This lab introduced me to file permissions in Linux and how to control access using commands like chmod. I learned about read, write, and execute permissions, as well as how they apply to different users. The numeric permission system, such as 755, was confusing as first and took some time to understand. After practicing, I became more comfortable interpreting and modifying permissions. This lab showed me how access to files is controlled in Linux, which is essential for protecting sensitive data.
Lab 6: Storage Management
In this lab, I explored how storage is managed in a Linux system. I used commands to view disk usage and understand how files are stored and organized. At first, interpreting the output of these commands was a bit overwhelming. As I continued working through this lab, I began to understand how storage information is displayed. This lab helped me understand how to monitor and manage disk space, which is important for maintaining system performance.
Lab 7: Shell Script
This lab introduced me to writing basic shell scripts to automate tasks in Linux. I learned how to create simple scripts and execute them in the terminal. The syntax for scripting was new to me, so I had to pay close attention to formatting and structure. After practicing, I was able to see how scripts can simplify repetitive tasks. This lab showed me the value of automation in improving efficiency within a system.
Lab 8: Task Automation
In this lab, I built on scripting by learning how to automate tasks within the system. I explored how tasks can run automatically without manual input. At first, it was a bit confusing to understand how these tasks are scheduled and executed in the background. After completing the lab, I gained a better understanding of how automation works. This lab highlighted how automation can save time and improve system management.
Lab 9: Networking Basics
This lab introduced me to basic networking concepts and commands used in Linux. I used tools like ping and ifconfig to check connectivity and view network configurations. Understanding the output of these commands was challenging at first because of unfamiliar terminology. With practice, I was able to better interpret the results. This lab helped me understand how systems communicate over a network, which is important in cybersecurity.
Lab 10: Basic Network Configuration
In this lab, I focused on configuring network settings and understanding how systems connect within a network. I learned about IP addressing and how configuration changes can affect connectivity. Some steps required careful attention to detail, which made the process slightly challenging. After completing the lab, I had a better understanding of how network configurations work. This lab reinforced the importance of proper network setup in maintaining secure systems.
