BLUF:
Many opportunities have been created through the use of cyber technology for workplace deviance. This is done by an increase in employee access to digital systems, data, and communication tools. These can lead to the misuse of workplace technology while opportunities expand.
Access to Sensitive Data:
Confidentiality of information in the modern workplace relies heavily on digital systems to help store this information within financial records and employee data. Those with access to these systems may have the ability to misuse their privileges by copying or altering the information. Since the digital data is able to be moved quickly and discreetly, it helps makes the process easier for individuals to remove or share sensitive information and material without immediate detection
Misuse of Technology:
Another way that allows for cyber technology to be misused by employees is the misuse of company resources for non work related purposes. Examples of this include activities such as: browsing social media, streaming movies or videos, or online shopping during work hours. These examples offer ways to show how the incorrect use of the resources can reduce productivity and waste resources. While also wasting these resources, it also opens the possibility for employees to commit fraud and manipulate digital records.
Reduced Accountability:
The third way that can cause or offer the misuse of cyber technology is through the use of digital communication. This can create a sense of distance between people which can lead to employees to feel less accountable for their actions. This can lead to deviant behaviors such as online harassment or engagement in unethical digital activities.
Conclusion:
Cyber technology within the modern workplace has expanded both opportunities and workplace deviance. This leads to the need for stronger security policies and monitoring systems for organizations. Some ways of deviance that can be seen in the workplace include: Reduced accountability, misuse of technology, and access to sensitive data.
