Workplace deviance can be described as voluntary actions that violate an organization’s regulations that can result in jeopardizing the organization. In the cyber technology field, workplace deviance occurs through insider damage. Insider damage is when a member of an organization utilizes their access to harm the organization. Due to technological systems, insider damage can occur without being face-to-face with another individual. An organization’s reputation can be in danger due to workplace deviance, such as information theft, hacking, cyberbullying, and cyberloafing. Information theft can be considered as personal, sensitive, or financial information. An employee can utilize their authorized access to databases, to expose these various forms of information. Hacking is the activity of compromising technological devices, motivated by financial gain or to rebel against an organization. An employee wanting to hack their organization’s computer systems can utilize malware or viruses to harm and compromise data. Harassment in the workplace is possible without confronting other employees through technology. Cyberbullying is a form of harassment that involves the use of technology. In the workplace, cyberbullying can be considered as sending threatening or harassing messages to another employee. Cyberloafing can be described as engaging in non-work related activities during working hours. An example of cyberloafing is browsing the internet for personal use such as online shopping or social media use. Organizations must ensure they implement proper cybersecurity measures to retaliate against cyber-attacks such as information theft and hacking. Monitoring technological use throughout the workplace can ensure productivity, performance, and morale do not suffer as a result of cyberloafing and cyberbullying. The rise of cyber technology has created more opportunities for members to harm their organizations, which can be challenging for organizations to avoid and identify. It is significant for organizations to have cybersecurity regulations in place, including cybersecurity awareness training and monitoring their employees for suspicious activity.
