Tidewater Community College (TCC), in collaboration with Old Dominion University (ODU), is developing and implementing a set of standards and building an educational pathway from an Associate of Applied Science degree (A.A.S.) to a Bachelor of Science degree (B.S.) in General Engineering Technology with emphasis on Mechatronics – with a maritime concentration.

The project focuses on a dual effort in the development of a pathway for maritime mechatronics education. The first effort reaches out to high school students by exposure to possible mechatronics careers through dual enrollment classes, and introduces students to mechatronics educational pathways. The second effort focuses on mapping out needed competencies for maritime mechatronics technicians and maritime mechatronic engineering technologists.
MechTech pathway
Using this dual approach, curriculum materials will be developed that serve different levels of maritime mechatronics: craftspersons, technicians, and technologists.  And a pathway will be established for further undergraduate education leading to work as supervisors, quality controllers, managers, and engineers in the field of maritime mechatronics.
