Beach erosion is a chronic problem along most of the open-ocean shores of the USA. As sea level rises and coastal populations continue to grow, there is an increased demand for understanding the accurate position of the shorelines. A primary goal of this project is to develop a novel and accurate technique for mapping and analyzing shoreline position. In this project we use the digital elevation models (DEMs) and aerial photos to map the accurate trace of shoreline. We are developing techniques to tackle this goal using two alternative methods: (1) extracting the shoreline position based on DEMs and a local tidal datum at the study area; and (2) extracting the shoreline position based on a fused DEM on aerial photos. We are using Monte-Carlo simulation and aerial photo of the cost to evaluate our models.
