The Vision Lab aims to develop novel theory, state-of-art algorithms, and architectures for learning and real-time applications in human and machine-centered interaction and recognition; biomedical imaging and signal analysis; and environmental and geoscience applications based on the disciplines of computer vision, signal/image processing and AI/machine learning.

- Congratulations Dr. Witherow for being appointed as Post-Doctoral Research Associate working in the Vision Lab at Old Dominion University.
– September 2024 - Congratulations Joe Zalameda on being awarded a Department of Defense SMART Scholarship. Joe is a PhD student in the Vision Lab and will be working with a facility in South Carolina on defense applications in conjunction with his program here at ODU.
– June 2024 - ODU Vision Lab welcomes Emily DeGroff, a student from Marshall University in WV, for the Research Experience for Undergraduates program with ODU Cyber Security. Emily is working with the lab to complete a project this summer involving reinforcement learning for cyber security applications. See Cyber Security REU for details.
– June 2024 - Congratulations Megan Witherow for successfully defending her dissertation “Computational Modeling and Analysis of Facial Expressions and Gaze for Discovery of Candidate Behavioral Biomarkers for Children and Young Adults With Autism Spectrum Disorder”.
– April 2024 - Khan Iftekharuddin, professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and director of the Vision Lab, has been elected a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE). Read the ODU news article here.

– June 2023 - Vision Lab welcomes NSF REU students Shawn McDonald from Coastal Carolina University and Isaac Longoria from Our Lady of the Lake University. Shawn and Isaac will spend 10 weeks conducting cybersecurity research with the lab for their Cyber Security – Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU).
– June 2023 - Old Dominion University has been awarded a $2.6 million grant by the National Institutes of Health as part of NIH’s Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) for Virginia Commonwealth University. The grant at ODU will apply machine learning techniques to analyze functional brain imaging and other imaging, proteomics and health informatics data in people with opioid use disorder, Parkinson’s and other diseases. Dr. Khan Iftekharuddin is the PI for the grant. See the article in ODU News.
– March 2023 - Dr. Khan Iftekharuddin has been named a 2023 Outstanding Faculty Award winner by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV). – January 2023 - Vision Lab hosts students in the Cyber Security – Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU). Jose Aguilera is from Amherst College Computer Science Program with a research interest in security applications using Deep Learning. Charlotte Carter is from Worcester Polytechnic Institute Data Science and Computer Science Programs with a research interest in Cyber Security for Medical applications.

– January, 2022 - The U.S. Department of Energy has recently funded $3M joint traineeships award to ODU, JLAB, Hampton University and Norfolk State University designed to support graduate-level education in critical need areas of accelerator technology.
