How has cyber technology created opportunities for workplace deviance?
By having a workplace that is tied with technology and giving or using these systems at work makes the workplace vulnerable. By giving access to information to another person, there is risk of that person breaking that confidentiality. This is ever present in the workplace, and especially due to workplace deviance. Lets say for example that an employee is dissatisfied with work, management, their workers, the corporation they work for, or whatever services they provide. Having access to the systems run by the organization or business, they can use this to sabotage it. Whether that be through exposing information only available to their position, sharing how cybersecurity works at their workplace as well as giving insight to the systems they use. Additionally, employees with access can manipulate data that shouldn’t be. Someone could go rougue and install malware that damages data and systems.
Moreover, employees may use workplace computers to access websites and content not allowed or approved by the organization such as gaming sites or social media. Without someone looking over their back all the time, unless having a system that does so, similar to a lockdown browser, this can pose serious problems.
Building up on the idea that employees can access social media websites, they may use this for nefarious ways. They can badmouth other employees or workers, harass others from getting work done, bullying others, or even conspire with one another to do some action against the organization. They may even use social media to post content deemed inappropriate for the workplace.
Another thing employees can do because of technology in the workplace is surf through the internet and therefore slack on work, while doing leisurely activities in the workplace. They can online shop for their next piece of furniture or buy a birthday gift before it’s too late. Or they could catch up on the latest episode of their favorite sitcom or tv show.
