Sport Professional Quest: Girl’s Flag Football

Since football is growing as a global sport, it’s important to understand that women love the game as much as men do. With football being a physical sport, women should be given alternatives like flag football so that they can be protected from major contact injuries but also learn more about the game. And now that flag football is an Olympic sport for the first time in 2028, it’s crucial that women play and learn the game from a young age so that they can reach their true potential.

High schools in America have powderpuff games and, in some cases, even allow women to play football depending on their position and talent. Powderpuff football is a popular game in the United States where girls in high school play flag football, but it isn’t really taken seriously as men’s football. How this could change is by implementing a women’s flag football season. This could allow high schools a chance to create a real women’s flag football team and compete against other teams in their conference. This season could also take place in the spring due to better weather and that it doesn’t disrupt the football season in the fall.

It is a huge opportunity to start a girl’s flag football program at Falls Church high school. I spoke with the head football coach at Falls Church about the growing interest of football for women. The question I asked him was: What would it take to start a girl’s flag football team at Falls Church to compete with other schools in the conference?

“They just started one this year. I know the biggest issue was field space. Not for practice but for games. They used a model where each school had one game and every team would play there that night. Usually 2-4 games. The following week at another school. The one day we had ours, it worked out where field hockey had an away game and we used the practice field instead of the stadium. There was a huge amount of involvement. This started with the offseason having a girls flag day at Woodson high school. Open to everyone; free. One of my coaches was there and a few old Washington Redskin guys, like Gary Clark. It was put on by the Commanders, who paid for a lot of the county’s bills for equipment.” – Tim Coogan

His response showed me that Falls Church and other Fairfax County Public Schools are on the path of growing the game of girl’s flag football across the state. It also seems like it is gaining support from NFL organizations and former players as well. The team schedule seemed interesting with how each week a different school would host and each team would play multiple games that night. To me, this structure is kind of similar to 7-on-7 tournaments in high school and it is a great way to compete against different schools in the passing game. If girl’s flag football programs in high schools continue to grow moving forward, the reach of the sport across men and women could have the same impact like basketball or soccer.
