Cybersecurity and Criminal Justice

The unique attributes of cyberspace that were talked about which were mainly global reach and anonymity hinder traditional investigative strategies by allowing people to hide who they truly are and keep their identity a secret as well as allowing these actions to occur overseas and across the world which makes things very difficult to investigate. An example would be someone stealing a wallet and taking their identity but if this were online they could hide their identity through a VPN for example.

I think that the main reason there is a lag between the reality of technology-connected crime and its representation in mainstream criminal research because of lack of knowledge and availability to knowledgeable research. It is clear that for majority of the time their is much information and science backed up on criminal activities that occur in person but there is a lack of science backing up crimes occurring online.

The course Insider Threat definitely bridges the gap between traditional social science and STEM because it requires knowledge in both aspects including criminal justice and cybersecurity. It is important to have knowledge on both parts because you must be able to find any threats whether it being someone not involved in the companies or even someone that is trusted inside companies, you never know.

I personally believe that the criminal justice system should create cyber units in order to specialize on any potential or current threats or crimes occurring. I think having this would ensure more safety and security.
