The IT Organization

In this week’s Perusall reading, John McCarthy’s 1955 Dartmouth Conference is cited as the birth of Artificial Intelligence (AI), with a goal to move computers beyond binary tasks toward “thinking machines”. The text argues that the current generation of AI, specifically Large Language Models (LLMs) like ChatGPT, will impact your career as significantly as the internet impacted previous generations.

1) The text compares how AI will affect the new generation how the internet impacted the previous generation. Understanding AI is important for the future generation of professionals because AI will be implemented and used by must organizations. Understanding how to use and implement it effectively will give you an edge in the field. Similar to when the internet was created, those who chose to not learn were at a disadvantage.

2) Data governance is the policies and procedures in place in order to responsibly and safely manage data for an organization. Data compliance are regulations regarding data that an organization must adhere to. Both governance and compliance policies work together in order to ensure security of data. These roles become more important as AI integrates with business operations because AI is still new and has vulnerabilities. AI software contains ethical concerns such as unintentional data leaks and discrimination. Due to this, data governance and compliance are important in order to keep AI in order with regulations such as GDPR.

3) I believe that AI will somewhat change the dynamic of how the IT department fits into the modern business structure. As AI continues to develop and become more sophisticated, many organizations rather use AI tools for entry level IT jobs instead of hiring inexperienced employees. This results in a scarcity of entry level IT jobs which changes the dynamic of the new generation of IT majors. However, I believe that AI can be used to aid the IT field and that there are still a variety of IT jobs that still require the human element to them.
