My LeADERS Experience at ODU
Participating in the LeADERS program at Old Dominion University was a defining part of my undergraduate journey. The program’s focus on high-impact learning-through leadership, applied work, diversity, entrepreneurship, research, and service-helped me connect my academic, professional, and co-curricular experiences in a meaningful way.
Leadership & Community
Serving as a Resident Assistant (RA) was one of my most formative leadership experiences. Managing a residence hall floor, I developed conflict resolution, communication, and organizational skills while supporting a diverse group of students. This role challenged me to lead by example and foster a positive, inclusive community-skills that have translated directly into my professional and academic life.
Cybersecurity Student Society
As an active member of the Cybersecurity Student Society, I collaborated with peers on projects, attended workshops, and organized events to promote cybersecurity awareness on campus. This involvement not only deepened my technical knowledge but also expanded my professional network and exposed me to real-world challenges in the field.
Professional Growth Through Internship
My internship was a pivotal experience, allowing me to apply classroom knowledge in a professional setting. I worked on cybersecurity policy and risk management projects, and the hands-on experience was so rewarding that I am now being considered for a full-time position. The skills and confidence I gained through LeADERS courses and co-curricular activities were instrumental in my success during the internship.
High-Impact Courses
Courses like Interdisciplinary Theories and Concepts, Global Leadership, and Entrepreneurship and Professional Studies were central to my LeADERS pathway. These classes pushed me to think critically about complex problems, understand leadership from a global perspective, and develop innovative solutions to real-world issues. The interdisciplinary approach helped me see how cybersecurity fits within broader societal and business contexts.
Reflection
The LeADERS program encouraged me to reflect on my experiences and build an ePortfolio that showcases my growth and skills. This process helped me articulate my professional identity and prepared me to confidently share my story with future employers. Overall, LeADERS gave me a holistic education and a competitive edge as I move forward in my cybersecurity career
