Investigative Analysis

Part of my coursework at ODU included performing analytical tasks such as interpreting and presenting evidence, assessing risks, and familiarizing myself with investigative processes. The artifacts I included here display skills in operational security, cybercrime analysis, and forensic reporting, reflecting a strong connection between technology and investigations.

Research and Reflection

From all the coursework I’ve done at ODU, the type of work I’ve been exposed to the most is research. The assignments showcased here demonstrate a mix of research design, critical analysis, and self assessment. There is my capstone paper that demonstrates my research abilities, the “Why I am (or am not) Deviant” assignment that applies theory to behavior, and lastly, I engage in reflection on personal growth and leadership through my final project called “My Leadership Through Public Safety”.

Technical

I’ve had the opportunity to practice my technical skills with various projects that I’ve put together. They demonstrate my design skills, and show my proficiency with tools used in technologies like programming, networking, and mapping. On the programming side, there are my IT 205 and CYSE 250 final projects. Lastly, there is my CRJS 344 final which demonstrates my knowledge in creating maps.

CRJS 344 – Final

Dear City Counsel Member,

I am writing in respect to the assignment that I was given. I have addressed the concern you had with distributing officers according to my findings, therefore I come with my report. Given the low presence of middle schools in the southern portion of Norfolk, an area that is seeing an increased youth population is neighboring one of these said middle schools. It should be noted that this middle school is located in an area that is at high risk for sex crimes. The increased youth population means that all those who are of middle school age will likely attend this middle school, especially given the lack of other middle schools in the area. This is one area of concern. Just north of this location, towards the middle of the map, there are two areas neighboring one another that are experiencing a significant increase in growth in its youth population. These two locations are situated just under an elementary school that is isolated from other schools, and is experiencing high rates of sex crimes in the area it’s situated in. The likelihood that the growing youth will attend this elementary school is high. Just northeast of this location also towards the middle of the map, is a string of schools ranging from elementary, middle, and high all concentrated in one area. While the risk for sex crimes is not as high in this area as with the ones previously mentioned, the risk is still present as per the data my map reflects. There is also an increased youth population neighboring this string of schools, where it is extremely likely all those youth will attend either of those schools given the availability for attendance of all grade levels. To conclude, my suggestion is that police officers should be pulled from the northern region of Norfolk and be assigned around the three areas that I mentioned. My reasoning for this is that the northern region showed no presence of sex crimes, therefore they could be more effective at preventing sex crimes in areas where it’s prevalent.

I hope this information helps. Let me know if you have any questions.

Respectfully,
Carlos Cruz Suarez
