Memorandum to Governor Karras – Data Privacy and Protection in the State of Mongo

In this paper I acted as an aide to a hypothetical Governor Karras regarding the issue of privacy and data protection in the hypothetical State of Mongo. The goal was to explain the issue in simple terms as the governor is not tech savvy, but he needed to understand why constituents were upset. I talked about personal data, biometric data, PII, consent, breaches and the GDPR; and then suggested legislation to protect biometric data, better PII laws and breach notifications. This exercise allowed me to practice communicating legal and technical matters to nontechnical people. It has also shown me how cybersecurity policies directly impact individuals’ safety, their trust in institutions collecting their personal information, and their level of control over their own personal information.
