In the field of cybersecurity, practical experience is essential for developing both technical expertise and the ability to operate effectively in real-world environments. Professionals are responsible not only for securing systems, but also for supporting users, responding to issues, and communicating across teams. Because of this, academic internships are a critical component of preparation for careers in areas such as cloud security, site reliability engineering, and incident response. These experiences provide exposure to real systems, user needs, and operational workflows that cannot be fully replicated in a classroom setting.
Overview of Internship Experiences
As part of my academic internship, I gained experience in two distinct but complementary roles: working as a receptionist in the Computer Science Tutoring Center and serving as an IT intern.
In the Computer Science Tutoring Center, I acted as the first point of contact for students seeking academic support. The goal of the center was to provide accessible tutoring for students in technical courses such as programming and computer science fundamentals. In this role, I interacted directly with students to understand their needs, coordinated tutoring sessions, and ensured that the center operated efficiently during both low- and high-traffic periods. A key part of my responsibility was helping students who were often unsure how to explain their challenges, requiring me to actively listen and guide them to the appropriate resources.
In addition to this role, I completed an IT internship where I was introduced to real-world technical environments and support processes. The purpose of this experience was to develop hands-on skills in troubleshooting, system support, and IT operations. During this internship, I assisted with diagnosing technical issues, supported system configurations, and observed how IT professionals manage and resolve problems in real time. This experience allowed me to connect concepts learned in the classroom to practical applications in an operational setting.
Reflection and Professional Development
Through these experiences, I developed a deeper understanding of both the technical and human aspects of working in IT and cybersecurity environments. One of the most significant insights I gained was the importance of communication. While working in the tutoring center, I regularly interacted with individuals who were frustrated or uncertain about technical concepts. This required me to practice active listening, adapt my communication style, and ensure that each person felt supported and understood.
A particularly meaningful aspect of this experience was recognizing how much user interaction impacts the effectiveness of technical support. Even when solutions exist, they are only useful if they are clearly communicated and accessible to the person experiencing the issue. This realization has influenced how I approach problem-solving, emphasizing clarity and user-focused thinking alongside technical accuracy.
One challenge I encountered was managing multiple responsibilities in fast-paced environments, particularly in the tutoring center during peak hours. Balancing efficiency with attention to detail required strong organizational skills and adaptability. This experience helped me become more comfortable working under pressure while maintaining a high level of service.
Overall, this academic internship strengthened my skills in communication, organization, and real-time problem solving. It also highlighted areas for continued growth, particularly in expanding my technical depth to complement my ability to work effectively with users.
These experiences are directly relevant to my career goals in cybersecurity and cloud-based roles. In positions such as site reliability engineering or cloud security, professionals must not only understand complex systems but also respond to user needs, manage incidents, and communicate effectively across teams. This internship provided a strong foundation in both the operational and interpersonal skills necessary to succeed in these environments.
Work Samples
ITG-Internship-ppt-pdfThis was a presentation given to my intern mentors reflecting on my time spent at their company. It was a great experience to drill down into the learned skills and experiences during my time there. I also gained confidence in my public speaking skills by delivering this presentation to the entire company and internship program heads.
