SPAN 102

Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational Modes of Communication

Artifacts

Exploring Culture

I learned about the attitudes towards the LGBT community across Latin America. That in many countries such as LGBT rights are being recognized and decriminalization of Homosexuality is spreading. However many are still discriminated against and many LGBT Latin Americans will immigrate to the US for a more welcoming environment.

Interpersonal Communication

In this activity, we had to cook a dish that we were familiar with, for my dish I chose cheese eggs and toast. While cooking this dish we had to list our ingredients and the steps to cook our dish entirely in spanish. This activity helped me better identify foods and my feelings about food by physically interacting with them.

Before this activity, I had more difficulty speaking because i couldn’t attach anything physical to it. Actually cooking made it easier to attach spanish to some of the things I interact with on a daily basis. Now though I find it much easier to communicate my likes and dislikes about certain foods. As well as being able to articulate what i’ve eaten and the last time I had eaten.

Presentational Speaking

In this activity we had to create an advertisement for a sports club. In my advertisement I talk about how fun and exciting a dance club would be.

During this activity, I initially struggled with how I would present my advertisement because at first I wanted to do have it be more reading intensive. However none of my favorite or the most memorable advertisements were ever that reading intensive, instead they were more auditory. So instead I leaned more into speaking and having my advertisement focus on speaking.

Presentational Writing

In this activity we had to produce a flyer that describes certain illness and how to treat them. We would write specific symptoms of our chosen disease, along with ways to treat and prevent the disease.

At first I found it hard to write the symptoms, such as a redness in the throat, because of the way we had to form our sentences. Combined with the use of commands in that chapter, I oftentimes knew what I wanted to say however I was worried I wouldn’t write them properly. it became easier after looking at some resources by spanish medical institutions and their usage of commands and how they would talk about specific symptoms.

Interpretive Listening

Listening

This was an activity testing our ability to listen for certain syllabus in spanish. Many activities such as this proved effective for improving my listening skills.

At first during these activities I found it hard to discern pronunciation differences, but through these actives these discrepancies became known to me. In order to get better at listening I would listen to Spanish music outside of class. Doing this allowed for me not only to appreciate spanish music but greatly improved my ability to listen.

Interpretive Reading

LASSO

This was as passage we had to read for our Unit seven project talking about sports. the passage in question is about a running club and the times that it operates.

At first when I encountered large walls of text like one above i’d try to focus on each and every word to figure out what it means. however, this proved to be ineffective many times and i’d end up getting confused about what I was reading, now however I scan the text and focus on what I do know and go from there to figure the meaning.
