Deviance is defined as “the fact or state of departing from usual or accepted standards, especially in social or sexual behavior.” With the advancement of technology, deviance does not have to only occur in person. Through the creation of social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter, employees and employers can use their personal devices while they are on the job, creating a sort of workplace deviance, or distraction. Examples of serious workplace deviances could be an employee who is denied a bonus or raise, so they go online to criticize their employer or the company they work for. They could also go online and try to attack their company themselves through cyber-attacks to try and disrupt the workplace. This could also take place in the form of the employee going and downloading the companies’ secret data and trying to sell it to rivaling companies or online. Although organizations have been taking serious actions to mitigate the risk of cyber-deviances, it looks cyber-deviance could continue to be a major issue facing companies, especially with the ever-evolving technology playing a factor. It is becoming increasing important for companies to implement their business with training on what deviance is so that they may learn from previous mistakes by other employees, thus being able to prevent future problems within the workplace. In the end, cyber technology has created plenty more ways for workplace deviancy to occur and has also made it much easier to do and it makes it much harder to get caught, especially with internet anonymity. Workplace deviance will always occur in all types of work, but cyber technology makes it that much easier to execute. It is important train and to detect these types of deviances before they may happen to prevent more immense damage not only to the company, but to the individual who thinks that this may be a good idea.
