What is the overlap between criminal justice and cybercrime? How does this overlap relate to the other disciplines discussed in this class? The line between criminal justice and cybercrime has become more and more similar and thin as time has gone by and technology has advanced and become more relevant to our daily lives. Considering how many crimes can be committed online, there is no wonder why criminal justice has taken strides to make the overlap between the two even smaller. A very common way that people commit crime is through the use of websites such as dark web. The criminal justice field has had to reevaluate how they categorize and perceive crime in order to envelope the cyber aspect of it due to the rise in websites than pander to these sorts of criminal hubs, for example Black Hats. Black Hats are illegal hackers who steal information from companies or individuals for their own personal gain. These individuals can be prosecuted due to the overlap between the two fields. As well as the uprise in crime and criminals, there has also been up swing in the laws that have to be made due to these criminals. Some of these laws include crimes such as cyberbullying, slander, accessing private data, and even hacking into secure government servers. But since these types of crimes have only come about due to the rise and popularity of the internet, criminal justice has yet to fully catch up to the scale at which these crimes are being committed. This overlap can also be related to the reading of and about crimes and how criminal justice partners and programs in the country respond to these said crimes. Cybercrimes such as this also begin to encroach in to the financial and legal territory, so policy needs to be developed in those communities as well to handle cybercrimes when these big businesses and private individuals are attacked.
