The Port of Virginia’s 8 Week Summer Internship Program runs from June 3rd – July 26th and is designed to develop, teach and mentor undergraduate and graduate students as they explore career opportunities within the maritime industry. Students will be given the opportunity to apply classroom knowledge to hands on project focused tasks in various departments throughout The Port of Virginia.

Intern: Environmental and Engineering
The Port of Virginia’s Environmental and Engineering intern will assist in maturing the port’s geographic information system (GIS) for roll out across the organization. The intern will assist with key tasks of GPS field verification of utility locations and importation of that information into GIS. Day-to-day responsibilities include technical reading, writing, and reporting findings. In addition, the intern will identify, inspect, and track the condition of all stormwater ponds (BMPs). The intern will assist in GPS geolocation of pipework, footprint, and condition of the BMP, all of which will be uploaded to the GIS database. Candidates will be expected to have relevant coursework in Engineering (environmental or civil), Environmental Science, other natural science, or related.

Potential Learning Outcomes:

  • Obtain knowledge on how to develop and implement field work protocols.
  • Understand GIS and GPS standards and protocols.
  • Learn environmental BMP inspection practices.

Eligibility Requirements: 
1. Must be available to work full time (40 hours per week) during June 3rd – July 26th
2. Must be currently enrolled in an accredited four year college program (having completed freshman year).
3. Must have a 3.2 GPA or higher (must be able to provide proof of current enrollment and GPA if selected).
4. Selected applicant must be able to pass a pre-employment background check which may include any of the following: Academic record and verification of education and/or certifications; Employment history (including references); Criminal history; Driving record; Fingerprinting; drug and alcohol testing, Fit for duty Physical, Other records or information related to the candidate’s suitability for the position.
