Even though sport is a multibillion dollar industry, it still runs on something simple, relationships. Behind every athlete, broadcast, team, and brand, there are real people who build trust over time. For the Sport Professional Penpal assignment, my goal was to make a genuine professional connection with someone who has lived sport at a high level and can offer insight beyond what we see on highlights and social media. That is how I connected with my penpal, Palmer Edema.
I started by thinking about what kind of sport professional would help me learn the most this semester. I wanted someone with real experience in competitive sport, but also someone who could speak to the life choices athletes face when the spotlight fades and responsibilities grow. I looked for a person whose story showed both excellence and perspective, because that combination is rare and valuable.
When I reached out to Palmer, I focused on being respectful, clear, and confident. I introduced myself as a student and explained the assignment in a straightforward way. I asked if he would be willing to serve as a professional contact for the semester, and I also acknowledged that his time matters. I let him know I would keep communication reasonable and organized, with questions that are thoughtful and tied to the course. I did not want this to feel like a random message, I wanted it to feel like the start of a real professional relationship. Palmer agreed to be my penpal, and that moment made the assignment feel real, because the connection was based on trust and mutual respect.
Penpal Bio: Palmer Edema
Palmer Edema is a former professional tennis player who competed from 2015 to 2017. His journey stood out to me because it shows that sport careers do not always follow one straight path. Palmer stepped away from professional tennis to focus on supporting his family, including caring for his special needs child. That decision says a lot about character and priorities, and it reminds me that athletes are people first.
After stepping away from the professional circuit, Palmer began a career in the Navy as another way to serve his country while creating stability for his family. Even with that major life shift, tennis has remained part of who he is. During his time in the Navy, he joined a Navy club tennis team, which keeps him connected to the sport he loves while balancing work and family life.
I am excited to learn from Palmer throughout the semester because his story represents the human side of sport, discipline, sacrifice, resilience, and identity. I hope our conversations help me better understand what it takes to compete, what it takes to adapt, and how sport continues to shape a person even after their professional career changes.
