I had the opportunity to sit down with my shipmate, HM2 Palmer Edema, for an informational interview to uncover the most noteworthy aspects of his professional story. What I discovered was far more than a sports resume — it was a story about purpose, sacrifice, and the quiet power of never fully letting go of the game you love.
Palmer is a former professional tennis player who competed from 2017 to 2019 before making the decision to enlist in the Navy to provide financial stability and healthcare for his family. Through our conversation, it became clear that his journey was never defined by what he gave up, but rather by what he chose to protect.
Using the insights gathered from our interview, I created the infographic above to visually capture the three defining chapters of his life — his rise on the court, his commitment to family through military service, and his rediscovery of tennis as a personal outlet rather than a profession.
Palmer’s story is a powerful reminder that an athlete’s relationship with their sport does not end when the career does. As he said best himself — “I don’t play as much now, but I cherish it more.”
