Job Advertisement Analysis!

The company I had to decided to do an analysis on was the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Specifically, I had analyzed the job posting for a special agent that works with an expertise in the field of cybersecurity/technology. One hard skill that I had noticed right away was that they needed data analysis, this hard skill is essential for the job because the applicant must identify and determine how to mitigate cyber threats. The job posting had even doubled down by stating that the applicant must have a bachelors degree relevant to the cyber field. The job posting explicitly states “Candidates must have a bachelor’s degree or higher (preferably in computer science, engineering, data science, information technology, or a related field) from a U.S. accredited college”. I like to refer to this statement because data analysis is a hard skill that is often gained through experience and knowledge learned from examinations and courses, typically a bachelor’s degree which they highlight as a requirement. The soft skills that I had noticed that were needed for the job were communication and teamwork.

For the communication soft skill, the job posting had stated that the applicant must “Exercise judgment, resourcefulness, and versatility in meeting investigative demands.” I believe communication is a perfect soft skill for this requirement because it indicates that a job duty requires the employee to provide clear reporting. The employee must provide clear documentation that is concise and ensures all of the specialized agent’s findings, decisions, and overall analysis when it comes to cyber risks. These documentations are then reported to courts, prosecutors, and supervisors within the cyber team.  The other soft skill that had stuck out to me was teamwork.

Teamwork is an essential skill that all special agents working in the cybersecurity field need. The job report explicitly states that a special agent must “Create and maintain effective liaison relationships with federal, state, local, tribal, territorial, and international law enforcement agencies.” I believe this requirement screams teamwork, because the mission statement reflects that an agent must work on a shared goal with other bodies of law enforcement such as FBI, local police, or even international partners. These relationships must be effective in completing a shared goal which needs support from all branches, as well as maintaining those relationships, this statement is to display that this duty is not a “one person” show but a team that share one goal and must collaborate together to complete this objective.

I felt that the ad displays that the culture of this company is diverse. I noticed on the ad posting that they had an image of all walks of life working together at a meeting space. The culture also makes me feel that I maybe one day could also work alongside this deep and impactful sector of law enforcement. Based on the ad’s texts, I do believe that work would be diverse, because the ad does state “The FBI is an Equal Opportunity Employer, and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for this vacancy. Unless explicitly authorized by law, selection will be made without regard to, and there will be no discrimination because of, color, race, religion, national origin, marital status, parental status, physical or mental disability, genetic information, age (40 or over), sex, pregnancy and related conditions, or on the basis of personal favoritism, or any other non-merit factors.” which implies that they will not reject based off of personality, religion, or race. I also love how they mention personal favoritism won’t be a factor, I have had some instances where I was certain that personal favoritism elevated others beyond myself due to their personal ideas. Yes, I believe the wording in the ad relates to every U.S. citizen that wants to work for a higher purpose, not only protecting themselves, but their family, and the nation. I feel that carrying that purpose might seem like a huge monkey on the back, but something about accomplishing something so great must feel indescribable.

Personally, I feel that the ad is super appealing to the world of future cybersecurity experts. I like how the ad mentions that you would have hands on experience working with “cutting-edge technology, you’ll refine your troubleshooting and information security skills, enhance your expertise.” This will ultimately help you carve your path to becoming a leader in the cyber world. If I were to improve this ad, I would involve a lot more graphics, to really paint a picture for the applicant. I understand that the overall feeling of the job posting is top secret and no tolerance for lack of maturity. However, I do feel that graphics “pump up” new applicants and make them truthfully eager to enjoy their next path in life.

What I found most interesting with the ad after using Voyant tools was that there was a score of 64.20 for the readability index. That means that this entire ad was written at most at a ninth grade level, I thought it was very clear and concise, I felt pretty important reading it, but the application was made for most general audiences to understand the necessary requirements and duties. The frequency of words had also shifted my perspective after using Voyant tools. One of the most repeated words on this ad was “miles”, I had not paid much attention to this portion because I figured the job would be based in an office located in Washington, D.C. I was completely wrong after scrolling all the way down to the bottom and finding that the location only states “on the road”. Which tells me that this job does require some travel by foot, which could indicate physically having to adjust to new environments and capturing cyber threats. Voyant tools can help me in my upcoming paper by detailing exactly what audience the ad is trying to reach and what words are most used to highlight different perspectives that might be missed on initial glance.
