Reflective Writing Assignment

This course provided me with the opportunity to consider different situations through an ethical ideological perspective. I was able to analyze a variety of different tissues and provide possible solutions using an ethical idea as an important aspect in finding a solution that could be considered ethical to solve a seemingly unethical situation.

The idea involving the United States of America following the European Union in their privacy laws was a topic that I thought was interesting to consider using the contractarian ethical perspective. The need for a common set of privacy standards that exceed the borders of nations is important. I think privacy is something many people value. Many people could benefit from having privacy protections that are agreed upon by most people. Furthermore, the contractarian ethical idea is associated with an agreed upon set of standards meant to provide people with an ethical and fair way of living. A strong aspect to this ethical ideology is the voluntary aspect of it for it to remain ethical. If a country wants to join an ethical organization, then it should be done voluntarily and not forcibly.

Deontology is a concept that I think helped me look at actions differently. This idea is associated with intentions and how intentions need to be right in order for something to be considered ethical. My thoughts on this idea have changed as I have started to realize that this ethical idea can be applied to everyday tasks. Even good actions can be unethical if they are done with bad intent. I think that deontology involves both physical actions and mental and emotional components that should be considered more by more people. Furthermore, I think that deontology can help people think more positively and do actions that can be considered ethically good and morally good.

The ethics of virtue is an ethical tool that provided me with a perspective toward the future. While deontology helps me think about the present, virtue helps me think of what the future could hold. Ethics of virtue provides the opportunity for me to strive to be the best version of myself that I can be by acting for what is right and finding courage to overcome fear. My thinking has changed toward this idea. I thought laws should not be broken. However, now I think that specific actions should be allowed to break specific laws if those actions are virtuous.

Ethics of virtue, deontology, and privacy laws are all concepts that were introduced in the course and helped me apply ethical ideology to my life. I have gained an ethical perspective when looking at everyday struggles that I did not have before. Furthermore, the use of ethical ideas is something that I think should be more widespread as ethical ideas can influence ethical revolutions and standards meant to protect the privacy and personal rights that so many people value. Furthermore, I think that a key component in uniting the world is through ethics that could be practiced with respect in different parts of the world.
