Fundamentally, Old Dominion University’s Learning through Active Discovery, Engagement, Reflection, and Showcase (LeADERS) program helps students transition from being students to professionals. Although I spent the majority of my time in college studying theories and concepts, LeADERS encouraged me to apply what I learned to real-world situations. In essence, it serves as a guide for “learning by doing”, whether through community service, internships, or specialized research projects.
The program’s main goal is to assist students in understanding their education. LeADERS urged me to pause and consider how my coursework truly relates to my professional objectives rather than simply passing a test and moving on. It resulted in the development of an ePortfolio, which is a polished method to “showcase” my practical experiences and demonstrated abilities to those who haven’t seen my work in person.
Why I Choose LeADERS
I chose to pursue the LeADERS distinction because I wanted to graduate with a track record of accomplishment rather than just a degree. Technical expertise is only half the fight in the rapidly evolving field of cybersecurity. You must demonstrate your ability to use that knowledge in high-stakes professional settings.
The program’s opportunity to help me discover my path/goals was what really drew me in. I was able to turn my lab work and internship into a professional narrative thanks to Leaders. It helped me realize that tasks like troubleshooting a network or documenting a forensic investigation are more than just class assignments. They are the foundation of my professional identity.
I took this route because it made me deliberate. It transformed my time at ODU from a set of requirements into a customized experience that equipped me to confidently explain not only what I know but also what I can do in a job interview.

My professional identity has evolved from a technical student to a well-rounded cybersecurity professional with each course I’ve taken. I approach every security challenge with a “human-first” perspective on privacy and social responsibility thanks to the critical ethical framework that PHIL 355E instilled in me. My entrepreneurship coursework taught me how to turn academic theories into workable, market-ready solutions, which improved my capacity to innovate and approach societal issues from a business perspective. IDS 300W served as the “connective tissue,” equipping me with the interdisciplinary research abilities to close gaps between various departments and points of view in order to address intricate, multifaceted issues. Ultimately, CYSE 425W elevated my viewpoint to a strategic level, giving me the skills necessary to manage risk in both the corporate and governmental sectors, draft high-level policies, and match security objectives with national interests.
Integrating these varied skills into a coherent professional narrative has been made possible by the Learning through Active Discovery, Engagement, Reflection, and Showcase (LeADERS) program as a whole. It has shown me that genuine expertise involves more than just knowledge; it also involves the capacity to think back on your experiences, find new uses for what you know, and demonstrate your worth to the world. I now have the self-assurance to lead under pressure, the analytical abilities to handle moral conundrums, and the communication skills required to close the gap between technical teams and executive leadership thanks to this program. I’m graduating with more than just a degree, I’m graduating with a track record of flexibility, creativity, and leadership in the rapidly changing digital world.
