CYSE 201S Journal Five

Review the articles linked with each individual motive. Rank the
motives from 1 to 7 as the motives that you think make the most sense
(being 1) to the least sense (being 7). Explain why you rank each
motive the way you rank it.

7. Recognition – Most hackers wouldn’t risk a crime for recognition unless it was a MASSIVE score, in my own opinion. Too much risk associated with devil may care crimes just to get your name out there.

6 & 5. Entertainment and Boredom –
I feel these 2 reasons are basically the same thing, and can be used interchangeably; Same reasoning as recognition, risk factor is simply too high to justify.

4. Political – This one is more understandable. Politically motivated crimes seem to be on the rise worldwide, and with governments and society in general relying on technology more, politically motivated cybercrimes aren’t unheard of.

3. Revenge – A jealous ex, a former employee, or just some random you wronged on the internet would all be motivated by revenge. It’s petty, yes, but if someone is mad enough, and motivated enough, they would be willing to do alot of things; like commit crimes, or steal some of your information.

2. Money – Realistically, money motivates like 80% of things people do in our world today, especially crime. If you ask most criminals, especially cyber criminals why they did what they did, you’re probably gonna get told “to get paid”. It’s just the nature of the beast.

1. Multiple Reasons – Any combination of the reasons above would probably be the most reliable reasoning as to why someone would commit a cybercrime. Nothing motivates someone harder than a justifiable reason with the added benefit of getting paid for it as well.
