The article highlights how technology, and communication tech has enriched our lives in the past decades, but has also opened up brand new vulnerabilities across the world. It discusses not only dangers from foreign actors trying to attack countries and individuals, but also from those in power trying to silence critiques, and restrict freedoms, such as freedom of speech. Information technology not only enables people to have a louder voice, but it enables those with power to restrict, silence, or even turn those words back on them in an unexpected way. One example being if the President gives a speech, his opponents can clip part of the speech without context, and use it to misrepresent what he was saying.
The most dangerous part is this societal battle via information tech is happening not in person, but around the globe, indirectly. Rarely does information warfare, or cyber crime take place in person. You barely ever know when it’s going to strike until it already has. Society needs to educate itself not only on the dangers of cyber crime, but the impact of potentially false information. Researching, and discussing topics is a great way to counter this sort of information warfare, as well as questioning news articles, and information surrounding politics.
