Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational Modes of Communication

Exploring Culture

Products and practices that helped me understand cultural perspectives were the Exploración Cultural chapters that were a part of the LingeroLearning textbook. The Exploración Cultural chapters show the similarities and differences between the United States and Spanish-speaking countries. We learned more about gender roles in sports, LGBTQ+ communities, different types of dishes, and health/wellness topics in Spanish-speaking countries. I grew my understanding of Spanish-speaking countries’ cultures from the information on the topics listed.

These products and practices helped me better understand the values and attitudes in the Hispanic culture and my own by showing the similarities and differences between the two cultures. These products and practices challenge my worldview by offering a lot of differences between countries, but there are also a lot of similarities in cultures, especially with the younger generation. 

Engaging in Communities

Engaging in my immediate and global communities is essential so that we can learn from each other and grow as we learn more from each other with our differences. By engaging with our communities, we could see many of the similarities we all share.

I do not have any experience or participation in these communities. 

Interpersonal Communication

We used TalkAbroad to further our communication in Spanish. TalkAbroad is an app that will pair students with trained native speakers in their targeted language. For TalkAbroad, you will meet your partner on a video chat and go over the targeted unit. The units that we for 102 were la familia and la buena salud y la comida. Inside of class, we would also do interactive communication activities with the class. These were group activities where our classmates would talk in Spanish and complete the communication activity. Interpersonal communication is a two-way communication and is considered an interpersonal mode of communication.


This was my first time using TalkAboard. It was a little tricky at first because I did not know how to use the website, but it got easier. I have grown with each assignment/activity by learning more about pronunciation and understanding listening more in Spanish. Pronunciation in Spanish is difficult for me; I overcame this difficulty by taking my time when communicating in Spanish and practicing new vocabulary.

With the TalkAboard activity, I could excel at putting key clues together to understand what my partner was saying. What I would do differently next time would be to better prepare myself for this activity, such as writing out questions to ask, key vocabulary words from the unit we are discussing, and writing down words/phrases that could help me ask more questions. 

Presentational Speaking

I have completed presentation speaking activities inside and outside the classroom are our video speaking project, TalkAbroad, and our in-class communication activities. Most of our projects in SPAN 102 included us talking in Spanish in a video format. Were these projects a part of our la familia and ¿Qué Comiste Ayer? Units. Our TalkAbroad activities included speaking Spanish with our partners from a Spanish-speaking country. With our TalkAbroad activities, we had to complete our handbook before and after to discuss how we did and prepare for our conversation. Presentational speaking is a two-way communication and is considered to be an interpersonal mode of communication. 

The challenge I faced during each presentation I completed was punctuation when speaking in Spanish. I grew and overcame these challenges by practicing and taking my time when speaking in Spanish. I did excel at the la familia unit presentation. What I would do differently next time is to practice more beforehand. 

Presentational Writing

The presentational communication consists of our class pamphlets, flyers, and articles to help us learn and better understand Spanish. These activities were inside and outside of the classroom. Some of the presentational communication was group work in the classroom. Presentational communication outside the classroom consists of the projects and activities we participate in in the LingroLearning textbook. Part of the presentational communication were projects 7 and 9: Un club deportivo estudiantil and ¿Cómo te cuidas?. Presentational Writing is one-way communication and is considered a presentational mode of communication.

The activities mentioned above, project number 7 and 9: Un club deportivo estudiantil and ¿Cómo te cuidas?, demonstrated how to write and present our information in Spanish. I have grown with each assignment and activity by increasing my word count and having more complex sentences in Spanish. Increasing my vocabulary and word count became easier over time with practice. Learning more grammar and being consistent with Spanish grammar was more difficult. I overcame these difficulties by doing practice problems to understand the grammar better. I excelled at increasing my word count and the new vocabulary that was being learned because I practiced writing more. To do better next time, I can practice the new vocabulary and grammar.

Interpretive Listening

Interpretive listening activities that I completed this semester were the activities part of the LingroLearning textbook that I completed for our homework. These activities were for either new vocabulary or new grammar being learned, which were also in every unit. Interpretive listening is a one-way communication and is considered to be an interpretive mode of communication. 


The different recordings I listened to/heard inside and outside the classroom were the activities that were part of the LingroLearning textbook. The speed at which the narrator talked and the inability to read and listen were the most challenging for me. I overcame this difficulty by taking my time to relisten to the recordings that were a part of the assignment. Understanding what was being mentioned within the recording was very interesting. My takeaway from the listening experience is to take your time and relisten to the recordings to better understand what is being mentioned in the recording. I have grown from each activity by understanding more of what is being mentioned and putting keywords together to gather more information.

Interpretive Reading

Interpretive communication activities that I have read inside and outside the classroom are articles, websites, and the Exploración Cultural chapters that were a part of the LingroLearning textbook. Interpretive reading is one-way communication and is considered to be an interpretive mode of communication.

Reading the articles, websites, or the Exploración Cultural chapters was sometimes unclear or challenging because I would not know the specific vocabulary or get confused by the new grammar in the readings. I overcame this difficulty by taking my time to re-read the task and to pick out keywords that were a part of the readings. The most interesting was picking out keywords and putting clues together from the readings to understand better what was being mentioned. My takeaways from the readings are to take my time, re-read the passage if needed, and pick out keywords and clues to figure out what is being mentioned within the passage. I have grown from these assignments by better understanding the context within the readings.
