Introduction
CYSE 406 helped me understand how laws and legal responsibilities connect to cybersecurity and the digital world. Throughout this course, I learned that cybersecurity is not only about protecting computers, networks, and personal information. It is also about understanding privacy, government authority, intellectual property, and the legal consequences of cybercrime.
This course helped me look at cybersecurity from a different perspective by showing how laws can help protect people and organizations while also placing limits on what governments and private companies can do. These topics are important because technology continues to change, and laws need to address new challenges involving digital information, cyber threats, and online activity.
Assignment 1: Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA)
For this assignment, I examined the proposed Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act, also known as CISPA. The proposed law focused on allowing companies to share certain cyber threat information with the federal government and other organizations to help identify and respond to cybersecurity threats.
The goal of this assignment was to explain what the proposed law was designed to accomplish, evaluate its strengths and weaknesses, and decide whether I supported its passage. This required me to look at both the benefits of sharing information about cyber threats and the concerns that can come with giving organizations and the government greater access to information.
One of the main benefits of cyber intelligence sharing is that it can help organizations recognize threats earlier and respond before an attack causes more damage. Sharing information can also help different organizations work together instead of trying to handle every threat on their own. However, the assignment also raised important questions about privacy, oversight, and how information shared for cybersecurity purposes could potentially be used.
This project helped me understand that cybersecurity laws often involve balancing national security and public safety with individual privacy rights. It also showed me why proposed laws should be evaluated carefully instead of assuming that every law intended to improve security is automatically the best solution.
Assignment 2: Evaluating a Cybersecurity Law
For my second assignment, I researched a new or proposed U.S. law intended to improve cybersecurity. The assignment required me to identify the law, explain what it was designed to accomplish, and evaluate whether it was likely to achieve its goals.
This project helped me practice researching legislation and looking beyond its basic purpose. Instead of only explaining what a law says, I needed to consider its potential benefits, limitations, and overall value to cybersecurity. This included thinking about how the law could affect individuals, businesses, and government organizations.
An important lesson from this assignment was that laws can support cybersecurity in different ways. Some may focus on protecting sensitive information, others may address cybercrime, and some may establish security expectations for particular systems or organizations. However, a law’s effectiveness also depends on how it is implemented, enforced, and updated as technology changes.
This assignment helped me develop a better understanding of how legal policies can support cybersecurity while also requiring careful consideration of their possible consequences.
What I Learned About Cyber Law
One of the biggest things I took away from CYSE 406 was that there is a legal side to almost every area of cybersecurity. Security professionals need to understand not only how to protect systems but also what they are legally allowed to do when investigating threats, collecting information, or responding to incidents.
The course also helped me better understand the relationship between privacy, intellectual property, criminal investigations, and government authority. These areas can sometimes overlap, which makes it important to understand the legal requirements and responsibilities involved.
I learned that cybersecurity laws need to protect people and organizations without unnecessarily limiting individual rights. Finding that balance is important as technology continues to develop and cyber threats become more complicated.
How I Can Use This Knowledge in the Future
The knowledge I gained from CYSE 406 will be useful as I continue working toward a career in cybersecurity, cyber law, or digital forensics. Understanding the legal side of cybersecurity can help me make better decisions when dealing with sensitive information, investigating suspicious activity, or helping an organization respond to a security incident.
This course also showed me why cybersecurity professionals need to stay informed about laws and policies that affect their work. Even if someone has the technical skills to investigate an attack or identify a vulnerability, they still need to understand the legal boundaries involved.
Moving forward, I can use what I learned in this course alongside my technical cybersecurity knowledge to approach problems from both a security and legal perspective. I believe that combination will be valuable in a future role, especially in government work, cybersecurity investigations, or digital forensics.
