SPAN 102

Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational Modes of Communication

Exploring Culture

Exploring culture was a fun topic in Spanish 102, I got to learn how different Spanish culture is from my own and the ways we are alike.

Throughout this semester of Spanish we had to research into Spanish culture. We preform this research by googling both in English and Spanish a few topics including what is the most popular sports in certain countries, I always chose to do mine on Chile. Chile was a very interesting country to learn about, they actually were one of last countries to pass on same sex marriages and rights. Along with being very progressive in the field of sports, both female and male sport leagues are very popular and their most famous athlete is a female. The best way we Explored culture was through our online textbook. we culture assignments where the textbook had excerpts from people from multiple different Spanish speaking countries talking about the topic we are covering at the time including health, family or even professions. It gave a better insight into their culture than all the research I could do because its in a 1st person point of view

Engaging in Communities

I unfortunately have not been engaging in my community like I should. It is an important role for each person to help out in their community.

I used to be very involved in my community a couple years ago before Covid-19 happened. I used to volunteer at my local youth group when i was in North Carolina and i would coach them my favorite sport American Football. With me coaching these kids after school, I believe I offered them a great outlet to maintain their health and also to make friends. football also allow them to experience great things like comradery and what its like to be like a team. Honestly if you think about it your community is like your team and its important to take care of your team.

Interpersonal Communication

In Spanish 102 we had two Talkabroad conversations. In these conversations we were given the chance to speak with someone in a Spanish speaking country in Spanish about couple different topics. We would speak with the person we chose for fifteen and aim to speak eighty percent of the conversation.

The Talkabroad conversations were very good eye-opening experience for me when it came to speaking Spanish. Neither of the two conversations had the same same experience or feeling to them. the first one revolved around our families, i was to come up with ten questions in order to direct the conversation in the direction I would like it to go. I realized quickly how underprepared for this and my anxiety skyrocketed before saying one word. I stumbled on every other word and I’m surprised I actually assemble a sentence during the whole fifteen minutes. After the fifteen minutes was up and wrote my reflection of it, the conversation showed me what areas I was weak in, including connecting words, reflexive verbs and verb conjugation. Once the second one came around I was way more prepared and was easily able to meet the requirement of speaking eighty percent of the conversation. I prepared for the second one by first selecting all the questions i wished to use and then came up with and answer and then a possible question the other person would ask and just made a script out of it. this preparation help calm my nerves and allowed me to have great conversation. The experience of these conversations shows I’m truly learning the language and that I am able to use it in everyday life.

Presentational Speaking

In Spanish 102 we had an assignment in which we had to make a video of us presenting our family tree. I created a video describing each member of my family all the way from my great grandparents down to me.

the Family member presentational video allowed me to speak about all the wonderful members of my family, describing their physical features and personality traits. At first the video was a little difficult to film because of my nerves and I was unsure on how to put it all together. I started out with filling out my family tree with the five members I wanted to use for the video. Then i wrote up a script describing each person and along with the dynamics of my family. Practicing this script over and over until I had it memorized, allowed me to get over my anxiety and nervousness and make the video. After reading the comments of my project, I still need to work on my verb conjugation and work on my annunciation of words.https://youtu.be/vI22G9YseIc

Presentational Writing

In Spanish 102 our project for unit nine we had to make an information pamphlet on a physical or mental health issue. For the project we had to describe the illness or condition, which symptoms to look out for, how to treat to illness or condition, how to prevent the illness or condition and the use of commands and reflexive verbs.

This project was the hardest for me during this semester because of the use of commands and reflexive verbs we were required to use in the pamphlet. When I started writing the project out I went back and forth between a dictionary and Lingrolearning trying to get a grasp on the commands and reflexive verbs. Other than the conjugation figuring out what topic to write about and would give me a lot of information. Tetanus was my chosen topic and it was easy to write about especially when came to prevention and what to look out for sections. The only things I would change about the way I did this project would be my prep time and the detail. My prep time for this project was short, the dates for this project got jumbled up in my head causing me lack in preparation and I should’ve went into more detail than I did in each section.

Interpretive Listening

In Spanish 102 we used an online textbook called Lingro Learning and in this textbook we had a couple assignments in which had us listening to sound clips and then answer a question. These sound clips had various lengths but helps interpret how words and phrases are supposed to sound like.

lingro learning, our online textbook, has many different assignments including sound clips, which allow to gain a better understanding of language through listening to it. At first these assignments were extremely difficult for me because I have a hard time hearing the differences between words or were the emphasis is placed. It took a lot of practice and many hours repeated the clips until I was able to comprehend more of the words in each clip and eventually understanding most of the clips in the book. The main thing I didn’t like about these listening experiences is you are unable to slow these clips down, which would of made them a lot easier to grasp what they are saying. I liked these clips because they help me excel in Spanish conversations.

Interpretive Reading

In Spanish 102 we had a couple assignments where we had to research about certain culture aspects of Spanish speaking countries Which had me to interpret multiple websites in both Spanish and English to find out about my topic.

This type of research method had me skimming through multiple websites trying to piece together as much as I could interpret what the websites are talking about on the Spanish versions. This method helped me learn how the the language is supposed to be written. Now at first it wasn’t easy using this method since I’m still learning Spanish but the more I learn the easier to read these sites.
