Oftentimes, college can cause a lot more stress than what an average person can handle. Exams, new content, homesickness, all of these things can add additional stress into your life. One way that I like to deal with this is with Self-care Sunday’s. I dedicate time for myself to really sit back and relax. By doing this every week I find that it really helps my mental health and almost every aspect of my life. Some ways to celebrate your own self-care sundays are highlighted below.
Just relax: Take a dedicated time to get into your comfy clothes and watch an episode or two of your favorite show or even a favorite movie! Allow yourself time to relax and really be able to unwind. A lot of built up stress can stay around if you don’t take time to deal with it.
Do a facemask: By taking time out of your day to care for yourself, you are allowing your mind to rest and your body to heal. 5Below has many different facemasks to choose from: sheet masks, clay masks, or even charcoal peels. Brush your mask on, tie your hair back, and scroll on social media for a while because you deserve it!
Order Insomnia cookies: Letting your sweet tooth run wild by ordering insomnia cookies is my personal favorite way of going about a self-care sunday! I always order two cookies and one scoop of ice cream. Once I receive my cookies I normally sit on my bed and journal about my week, by reflecting on it I can de-stress in a positive and healthy way.
Catch up with an old friend: Catching up with an old friend from high school or even back home is always a good way to get your mind off of the daily stressors in your life. You can reflect on your week with someone you feel comfortable with or even just meet with them through facetime to make that long-distance friendship feel like home again!
Workout: Many people may think that working out is not an ideal way to “relax”, but for some people, this is the best way to de-stress. You could go for a relaxing bike ride on the stationary bike, take a yoga class, or even do some full body stretches. Just remember, if you go to the student recreation center here on campus, sign up for a time slot to workout and don’t forget your mask!
All in all, there are many many ways to handle stress. Some are positive, some are negative. When you’re in college and dealing with this stress, it is a good time to learn healthy and positive ways to handle this stress. Most of the habits that you develop in college will carry over into your adult life. With that in mind, it is best to start practicing these healthy habits now and self-care sunday’s are my favorite way of handling this!
