Over these past three months in Sports Communication, I learned so much especially about how sports and the media work together. Before taking this class I thought sports communication was only about people writing or talking about games. I now realize that it also involves using social media, producing material, and interacting with fans in various ways.
One of the great things that I have learned from this class was learning how to create post for social media and publishing them. We completed tasks including creating postings and considering ways to capture readers attention. This demonstrated to me that communicating about sports involves more than just spreading information, it also involves telling stories and maintaining fan interest. Additionally, I discovered how important timing is, particularly when publishing during live events or breaking news.
While also in this class I learned how important it is to share knowledge responsibly. We discussed in class how quickly news can travel, particularly online. This made me understand that those who communicate about sports should exercise caution and ensure that the information they offer is accurate and kind. In this industry, professionalism and honesty are crucial.
Also working on the sports journal was another important piece in this class. At the beginning of this class I didn’t think it would matter much, but it helped me improve in many different ways that I didn’t know that I needed. It also made me realize how crucial having a solid online presence is. I now realize that a blog can demonstrate my abilities and be shared with potential employers.
I also learned how important teamwork can be in sport communication. Many assignments showed that working with others helps create better ideas and stronger content. Listening to different opinions made my work better. This is a skill I will need in the future, especially in jobs that involve communication and media.
Learning how to think like a professional was another aspect of this course that I enjoyed. We have to be imaginative, on time, and detail-oriented. I can use these abilities in a variety of professions outside of sports.
As more technology keeps coming out in the future I think that sports communication will continue to change as well. This class helped me feel more ready for that. I learned all the skills that I needed to know and feel amazing working in sports or the media in the future.
All in all, this course taught me a lot and made me consider my future more. It showed me that sports communication is very important and can also be very fun.
