The principles of science are relativism, objectivity, parsimony, empiricism, ethical neutrality, and determinism. Relativism is that all things are related. All advancements directly relate to the cybersecurity field. In the upcoming 2024 presidential elections, individuals within the cybersecurity field will have to defend our elections as most states do electronic results. The elections are all being influenced by AI-generated content that makes the presidential candidates appear real and say things they never said. As our technology advanced it rolled into our political system. Even 10 years ago AI was not advanced enough to influence elections on the scale it can now and it takes members within the cybersecurity field to stop bad actors during the elections. Objectivity refers to the way that scientists study topics in a value-free manner. Objectivity is seen in the way that free speech is being viewed on social media platforms. To what level of acceptance can our society allow free speech to be said on the internet? Cybersecurity individuals have to sift through false statements and remove them, but it can violate our basic rights. Even if the information isn’t true it falls into our First Amendment, but an influential person can cause serious damage with false statements. Parsimony means scientist should keep their levels of explanation to the simplest explanation possible. When explaining how hackers can shut down our power grids it should be explained in the simplest manner so that the general population can understand the context and not be confused. Cybersecurity will have to help the public understand why hackers can affect our networks and explain it in a manner that everyone understands. Empiricism refers to scientists only being able to study human behavior as it relates to our real senses. We can’t let our senses influence our ability to perform cyber tasks as our senses can lead to fatal errors and harm innocent individuals. Ethical neutrality means that scientists must follow ethical standards when performing research. Individuals within the cyberspace can’t hack another person’s network to gain research data even though it would allow them to gain that data faster. Members must follow ethical guidelines and practices even though it isn’t the fastest route. Determinism refers to behavior being caused by preceding events. For a hacker in a terrible country, they may only hack because they were forced to or need the money to survive. They were predisposed to bad events that led to them doing a job they didn’t necessarily want to do.
