Invertebrates

Blue Crab Callinectes sapidus

It’s Latin name means “beautiful swimmer” and it symbolizes the Chesapeake Bay. Found throughout the Bay, these invertebrates are important both commercially and ecologically. As young, they are important food sources for many fish and birds. The female in this aquarium was collected in September, 2019 and was only the size of a quarter. See video below of her snacking on some silversides.
