SPAN 102

Exploring Culture

It was mainly going to class that helped in my understanding of Hispanic culture, learning from the Teacher and not the textbook made learning about the culture better.

It helped that my teacher is from South America and visits regularly so she has first hand experience of how people do things in Spanish speaking countries. Sometimes my teacher would even point out discrepancies in some of the text or work that we were assigned and would clarify or say that somethings that are in the text book a real Spanish speaker would never say. The lessons felt more authentic because our teacher taught us they real way Hispanic people speak Spanish.

Engaging in Communities

It is very important to reach out to different communities to learn first hand and sympathize with them over issues that they face.

I never was able to engage with communities

Interpersonal Communication

Some of my friends speak Spanish so sometimes I try to hold conversations with them in Spanish but its difficult for me considering the have been speaking Spanish since they were born.

First semester of college I was defiantly slower when talking in Spanish, sometimes I would need to pause and think for a long time before I could respond. It was frustrating but I feel like my speech is smoother than last semester.

Presentational Speaking

The projects were the main times we had to speak Spanish out loud for a presentation. One of the projects I had to talk about the members of my family in Spanish and describe their personalities. The second project I had to talk about a recipe in Spanish and give steps on how to make one of our favorite foods.

I mainly struggled with memorization of my script and conjugating the verbs. Conjugation is a constant struggle for me.

Presentational Writing

I struggle in the writing assignments because I have bad memory and I can’t memorize words sometimes. So most times when I’m doing a writing assignment. Most times I can’t complete an assignment because I don’t know the words to answer.

It frustrating because its nobody’s fault, its just how my brain works. memorization has always been a struggle during my academic career. People always tell me to just study more but its never that simple. Learning a new language requires a different type of memorization, its not like remembering to take the trash out. Language memorization requires application to really keep it in my brain.

Interpretive Listening

The main listening assignments I did was on duo lingo and I feel that listening to Spanish is easier than speaking Spanish for me.

The understanding Spanish part is easy for me but speaking the words and remembering what words to use when I’m responding to someone. I can understand most words when they are written or spoken to me, but there is a disconnect when it comes to speaking I cannot remember the words.

Interpretive Reading

Almost all the assignments I had were reading assignments. To me reading Spanish is easier than responding.

Reading was the easiest part of all Spanish for me. Its something about reading Spanish that makes it easier for me to understand.
