The virtual reality experience of ImmerseMe will motivate you to analyze, evaluate, and apply practical everyday concepts in a real world situation. Using the four scaffolded learning modes of the ImmerseMe platform (pronunciation, writing/dictation preview, translation preview, and immersion), you will fully engage with real-life scenarios where you will be prompted to interact and negotiate meaning.

To fully appreciate ImmerseMe’s real-world applications and gaming features to recall, practice, and master (Wallinger, 2000) French, you will provide an in-depth reflection to recognize the multicultural learning experience. This is where you will write about: your assumptions and how they were formed, reflect on what French is, how one learns the language, the evolving understanding of Francophone cultures, and what language means to you personally. In addition, you will assess your learning progress in French, including strengths and challenges.

Pronunciation

Thanks to the immerse Me program, my pronunciation has improved drastically. The French Language has many little nuances in its pronunciation, which are easy to forget if you spend all your time speaking English. Compared to English, French vowels usually sound very different. French also has accents and nasal vowels, which just add more complexities to proper pronunciation. Thankfully, with the repeated practice given by Immerse Me I think my pronunciation is leaps and bounds better than it was at the start of the semester.

Writing/Dictation Preview

My spelling in English is atrocious, and it is even worse in French because of all the accents. Even though Immerse Me offers the typing section, it shows you on the screen what to type, so it wasn’t any real practice with spelling. While I do think it might help with selecting what terms and phrases you will use to respond, I found myself typically doing the typing section just to get familiar with the module. I am sure that doing the typing section have probably improved my French in some way, I don’t think it has significantly improved my skill to write in French.

Translation Preview

I found the Translation section extremely helpful with my learning process. It was great having practice converting what I would say in English into French. Throughout the semester, I found myself getting much faster at translating. Overall, this was definitely the most useful scaffolded learning process. I think in the future, the practice I had with Immerse Me will assist me at speaking French at a fluent level.

Immersion

The Immersion was hit or miss, honestly. Many of the Immerse Me module were just sitting in a room talking to another person. While it was useful being able to see the mouth of the other speaker moving it was often times lack luster; however, when the immersion hit it was very useful and expanded my cultural understanding of France. There were a lot of great environments, places such as the bakery and produce store gave me a more in depth understanding of how French culture is infused into their stores. There were many outdoor environments that did a wonderful job at conveying space and really making the environment feel alive. Unfortunately, I was never able to use Immerse Me’s virtual reality features but, I am sure that it adds even more cultural depth to the program.
